My daughter wants to live in South Quad next fall. She will be a sophmore and seems to be pretty positive that she will get in. Just wondering if anyone has an idea of her chances. She is a capstone scholar but missed the deadline (Feb 20th) to get priority to South Quad due to this.

FWIW, D who is now a junior and who was a Capstone originally selected South Quad for sophomore year and was able to not only get in but pick their room/suite.

At the last minute she opted out because her sorority needed several more people in the house, but her other three roommates stayed with the South Quad choice and added a fourth person. Housing was okay with this because the Greek system has some type of arrangement with them when it comes to filling the houses.

I know that she was VERY glad that she didn't live there and the other three girls couldn't wait to get out of there. I heard this numerous times but can't recall what the source of the unhappiness was. I don't remember all the details, but can get them for you.

They are all together again living in an off campus apartment so I think I can get the details for you.

I'll try to call her this afternoon and PM you when I learn the details.

EADAD... thanks. Would appreciate any information you can share. My D lives in Preston presently and (at least to me) seems like a pretty great setup; especially with location. However, she loves the idea of the private bedroom.

Hi, my son lived in Capstone his first year and lives in South Quad now. He seems to like it and does love that he has his own bedroom. He really hasn't complained at all about anything.

Most guys are pretty easy to please, certainly easier than the the girls are.....at least that's the way it is in our house.......present company excluded of course.... :)

I just spoke to my D's roommate who lived there last year and here's her take on things, not necessarily in order of importance.

PRO: Location is very convenient

CONS:

Cost: They paid more for 9 mos in South Quad than for 12 months in their Copper Beech 4 bedroom, 4 1/2 bathroom apartment which is HUGE and has private deck area, big eat in kitchen and living room. Their apartment was brand new last fall and fully furnished with brand new furnishings as well. I know I was really impressed when I saw it.

South Quad has no dishwasher in the kitchen area.

Private bedrooms are nice to have but they are tiny (her description...I have not seen them)

Common areas were dirty all the time, and when they moved in, their suite was not very clean and required lots of clean up by the parents before they'd let their girls live there.

There were numerous floods in the complex throughout the year and things got mildewy and moldy- they brought in huge fans to try to dry things out but not the best solution.

Lots of construction right across the street so there's a very high noise level.

I knew I had heard my D say she was SO happy about deciding not to live there. When I called her she put her roommate on the phone with me so she could tell me first hand what their experience was like. There was zero resistance by any of the three girls' parents to letting them move out and into an off campus apartment for whatever that is worth. The three girls who lived there last year are all now living in the apartment with my D.

Hope this helps.

I live in South Quad this year and have to disagree with eadad's daughter's friends.

Location is convenient, and yes, living on campus is expensive, but South Quad is no more expensive than any other on campus apartment. The way I see it, you're paying for convenience and a lot of the programming that RHA puts on. And if you can't find anyone to sublease, it usually doesn't turn out to be that much more expensive than off campus.

I have had no problems with dirty common areas (but that could be because we don't really use them except for the lounge on the first floor).
I also have never seen so much as a drop of water inside.
There is construction across the street, but I've never heard it. For me, the bigger concern is the trains (which I've ended up getting used to) and Marine ROTC doing battalion runs, yelling cadences at 6 in the morning outside of my window.
We've had a lot of problems with vandalism this year, particularly of one particular door. That's been kind of annoying.

To answer you actual question, I don't think it should be too difficult. In South Quad they tend to fill up the various communities (Capstone, CGC, Spanish) first, and then fill in. There's always several floors for other students, and they also put students into any empty rooms in the community. She might not get into the Capstone community, but I think her chances at a room are decent.

I just spoke with my son. Like betterdays stated, my son likes the location and convenience of living on campus. He plays baketball at Blatt gym which is right at South Quad and Russell House is not too far away. Also, he parks his car at Blossom parking garage which is beside South Quad.

As far as noise, he says he rarely hears the construction, trains and Marine ROTC. He says the dorm itself does tend to get noisy sometimes (like most dorms). There has been some vandalism and like eadad stated, there is not a dishwasher and the bedrooms are tiny. He was glad just to be able to have his own room. They do have the living room if they all want to watch tv.

He said their was been no water or mold/mildew problems. My husband and I moved him in and the whole dorm was clean.

I've heard great things about Preston and you definitely can't beat it's location. I guess you need to look at your options and see which one is a good fit for you personally.

trying to put down what i should put down as a freshman, i stayed in columbia with my bro when i visited i liked it but it was really small, and far away, i was wondering if anyone knew anything about what was happening to capstone next year because of the new honors housing. i was thinking about living in one of the all girl dorms but didnt know if i would get sick of living with all girls, even though i am planning on joining a sorority haha

My son was a Capstone scholar his freshman year, and is living with 3 other Capstone scholars this year (soph) in South Quad. It's a mystery to me how the housing is assigned. One roommate is moving into an apartment, so the remaining 3 all signed up to room together again well ahead of the deadline, and listed South Quad as their first choice for their junior year. The dorm assignments just came up on VIP, and they're in East Quad. (3rd choice.) That's fine with them --they heard the rooms are bigger, anyway. Odd for a group of juniors to get their third housing choice, we thought.

Could have been caused by a larger number of sophomore Capstone's needing on campus housing and requesting South Quad since sophomore Capstones are the first in line for getting spots there.

greenville
eadad is probably right,South Quad houses all the Capstone sophs who want housing there plus two other learning communities so even though it seems like your juniors should have gotten priority they were "bumped" by those groups.
Actually, I think East Quad has more upperclassmen above soph status than South so they might like it better anyway.Otherwise, they seem pretty similar to me layout wise, agewise, etc.

Actually, school status plays no role whatsoever in the general housing assignments. It's a random lottery.
