I got into the honors program, and I know most honors students live in South Quad. However, I hear good things about the RC in East Quad. It seems to be the most liberal dorm on campus with v. interesting people.

Does anyone have any pros/cons for these two dorms? Where would you recommend living?

It just really depends what you want. South Quad is a newer (1960s) high rise dorm - in good condition, conveniently located, and a bit institutional. In addition to Honors students, there are athletes and upper-level students living there. Most Honors students live in South. There's a fantastic computer lab on the 9th floor, and one of the larger dining halls right in the building, along with a cafe. East Quad/the Residential College is an older building and tends to attract a more "alternative" crowd. If you're part of the RC, you should have an interest in foreign language because there's a pretty serious language requirement. It's nice to be able to go to some of your classes right in the building - especially since most of the time you're in school, it will be cold outside. I have personally found that RC kids are interesting and interested. They're activists -- in student government, in environmental causes -- and they're active -- in theatre, the arts, clubs, etc. If you think you would be comfortable on a liberal college campus, then you will probably like the RC. I did meet one student who was going into the Business School - so they are not monolitically socialists or anything, but definitely left-leaning (as are most students anyway). I like RC kids. But then I like most of the U-M kids that I meet.

Awesome. Thanks for the info.

I know it's possible to be in both the honors program and the RC simultaneously, but since both programs require you take certain classes, I don't really understand how that would work out. Have you ever known anyone who has done both?

I know it's possible, but I don't know anyone who has done it. My recommendation would be to call the RC Admissions office and the Honors Admissions office and ask this question. When my son was looking into RC and Honors a couple of years ago, both offices were very helpful. We had a pretty active email exchange going with Honors also. They would generally write back very quickly.
