South Quad

I got into the Honors program, and I know most people in the program stay in South Quad. Can anyone who stays there tell me what it's like? I read around a bit and saw that it's in a good location and close to the Union and stuff, but I wanna know more of what it's like inside. Are the dorm rooms a good size (I want a double)? How are the people in the dorm? Do they get along and talk to each other? Are they friendly, or cliquey? Is there wifi? How is it safety wise? How are the bathrooms, dirty, or pretty well kept? Is it co-ed and how is that set up (by halls, etc)? Thanks so much!

South Quad has some of the largest dorms on campus. Granted, they are still dorms, so don’t expect anything huge, but in comparison to Markley, which a lot of freshmen get put into, the dorms are quite large. The people there are definitely very friendly - the two years when I lived there I loved the people on my hall. The hall environment is very friendly and inviting. Also, you would most likely be living only with freshmen in your hall, so everyone will be in the same position as you. Sometimes cliques occur, but in general everyone is pretty open. Of course, the first year I was there I lived in a hall with only girls in it, so that may have contributed to that occurrence. There are two set-ups for the coed factor. Some halls have a single gender living in it with a corresponding hall of the other gender. Other halls are completely coed with every other room (approximately) assigned to a different gender. The bathrooms are pretty well kept - my one complaint was that there is no changing area right next to the showers like I know some dorms have. There is wifi, but it is kind of slow and I know some people who still prefer to use an ethernet cord.

Dude, go south quad honors for sure. The honors kids are phenomenal. I completely regret not doing honors housing my freshmen year - I thought the honors kids would be “too absorbed” into studying and only studying, which is why I chose to live elsewhere, but I was so wrong. They know when to focus on school and when to party hard - if anything, living there will teach you how to time manage like mad. So I would recommend doing it.

Hey so I alpplied for honors housing (checked the box that says I want honors housing on the app), but now this year Couzens is opening again so do I have any sort of a chance of being put in Couzens or am I pretty sure to be put in SQ?

How specific is the housing app? Couzens isn’t bad location wise if you volunteer at the hospital or biomed research buildings often, about as far as markley for distance to the diag. I just moved out of SQuad. I’ll miss the community a lot, though not really the building itself. Safe, wifi’s good. Most of the students were amazing, computer labs and study spaces good but crowded, dining hall ok, dorms/baths survivable, mostly clean (friendly custodians every morning). Live there.

Preference a double, all the singles are probably gone to upper-class students by now. If you’re considering substance-free housing in SQuad I’d STRONGLY advise you to ask for more info first (which floor, which part of the hall, how many people, co-ed or not, etc.). Don’t be afraid to call housing with questions, better to ask now than make a mistake later.

Not specific. Right now on the Mich housing site it only lists SQ and Martha Cook (Not for me, I’m a guy) under honors but I remember reading somewhere that Couzens this year is housing “honors on the hill” and on the housing app all you could put was that you want honors housing. I just want a regular double, no substance free or anything.
