South

Are there any students from the South? (like Florida, Alabama, or Georgia?) Just curious. It didn't say anything about geographical or regional diversity on the Profile of the Class of 2011 on their website.

I just counted 20+ from southern states, glancing through the Whitman parents' directory (organized by students' states). Mississippi, Alabama, and South Carolina were unrepresented; Georgia and Virgina had the most. I know they are interested in increasing the geographic diversity and the trend toward a more national draw is definitely happening already. Whitman is a very welcoming and friendly campus I think..and eastern Washington is warm and dry compared to most of the Northwest...

But are they okay with me applying from in the state? Or is being from Washington not as well received anymore?

Being from Washington should not work against you as long as Whitman is a good fit for you and your interests and you convey that. The fact that they are looking for geographic diversity is just one part of the overall search for a well-balanced community of committed students (regardless of where they are from) So being from Washington would only work against you if you somehow conveyed that you viewed the school as a second-choice or "less-than" because it was close to home. Realistically, I think there are NW kids who want to go further from home who use Whitman as a "safety" school--so it is probably worth making it clear that even though you are "local"--Whitman is a school where you'd want to be, no matter where it was geographically.

Thanks for answering my question, mmaah :)

Is Whitman a good college?I guess what I am trying to ask is;If Harvard,Yale,Stanford, etc, are top Ivy League colleges,What Liberal Arts Colleges rank in the top ten and so on...

Just check out the list of colleges on CC under "top liberal arts colleges." There is basically your list of the top 20.
