Southern Academic schools with 3.76W and 2070?

Throw out some ideas!

I'd love to go to a school like Emory but I probably wont get in.

same state:
UGA

I saw your other post. Try Rhodes College in Memphis.

Southern LACs: Davidson, Washington and Lee, Sewanee, Rhodes, Furman and Centre.

Universities: Vanderbilt, Duke, UVA, UNC, Wake Forest, Emory, UGA

Tulane, UMiami, Trinity (TX)

You have a good shot at any of the schools- some will be reaches, but your stats are fine. Do you want small or large? Are sports important? How Greek?
Don’t forget Rice.

Davidson’s very selective, but I got in with a similar GPA. Test scores I wouldn’t worry about with Davidson, as long as you meet a certain mark you should be fine. They don’t care about testing, it’s virtually the last thing they look it. If you’re looking for a Southern Academic school, I don’t think you could get much better than Davidson. I like Rice as well, but you’d be getting two different things at each school, and some don’t consider Rice to be a Southern school really. But Davidson is extremely driven by academics, kids are very smart here, and school is always first before partying. We have fun though.

P.S., Emory is not as selective as you’d think. Plenty of people with similar stats as you are accepted to Emory. If you want to go there, you should DEFINITELY visit, as they don’t really give you a second look if you haven’t visited (unless you have a compelling reason).

I second the Rhodes suggestion.

I wouldn’t want to go to college in Memphis…

I want it to be Greek, but I don’t really care how big, just to have the opportunity.

I like the beach and grew up around one so I wouldn’t mind a beach, but it wouldn’t be that of a deal to not have one…

Furman seems like it might be a good fit for me (more liberal, outdoorsy) but it is very small… hmmmm

You want the beach? Consider Flagler. The list you posted elsewhere also has COC which is a hop skip and jump from the beach. You said you were considering ED at Emory, but then said you weren’t sure you wanted to be “binded down”. If you aren’t sure about Emory, do NOT apply ED.

Old Dominion, Virginia Wesleyan, and Coastal Carolina are all near beaches.

I dont want to pour cold water on your dreams, but some of the mentioned schools are clear reaches, and they are unlikely to accept you. Not that you could not or would not excel at those schools, as I FIRMLY BELIEVE that college admissions is a game of numbers, not a predictor of success. Schools like Duke, W & L, Davidson, Emory, Vanderbilt, UNC (if OOS) will either reject you or waitlist you. Its just the facts. My kid (2007) had the IDENTICAL SAT score with a HIGHER gpa than you and got hammered. Go ahead and try, its always worth a shot in the dark, but DONT count on it. FOCUS ON MATCH SCHOOLS and some quality safety schools. They will give you more money anyway.

If you get into a reach, congratulations! If not, move on…you will be fine. I recommend Furman, Sewanee, Rhodes, Wake, College of Charleston, Wofford, Presbyterian, UMiami, Clemson, UNC-Asheville, Elon, Birmingham Southern, etc.

Other schools to consider are Berry, in Rome GA and Ogelthorpe in Atlanta (both very pretty campuses, if that matters) and USC (South Carolina). Auburn and UAB too.

If you really want to go to Emory, try Oxford college of Emory for two years and get (guaranteed?) transfer.

There are plenty of kids who get into Emory, Davidson, etc with those stats. Not everyone does, but you have a reasonable chance. There are many other factors besides the GPA and SAT, so just make sure you have a safety or two that you like.

I dont have the stats for Emory, Mom. But I do know about Davidson, Vanderbilt, Washington and Lee. Unless you go to a super connected private school where the guidance counselor has an “in” with the adcoms, you simply cannot expect to be admitted EA/ED/RD with an SAT below 1400 and an UW gpa of 3.5 or lower. I am not saying it DOESNT occur, and if the applicant is a minority or has some other “hook” it can happen, but the kids I know with stats like that got waitlisted or rejected. One can always apply and see what happens, but its misnomer to suggest “plenty of kids with those stats get in” because they don’t. I’m sorry. My kid had a 2050 and an UW gpa of 3.8 and a Weighted gpa of 4.2 and didnt get in. P.O’d? Yep. But we moved on.

I’m just sayin …so this kid can have a clear and realistic picture of what to expect. He/She can apply and see what happens. But its much better to focus on match/safety schools.

p.s. We know someone at W & L who got in there with lower stats, but had LEGACY and MONEY OUT THE WAZZOO…waitlisted ED, but admitted RD after a whole bunch of letters and phone calls.

Alabama will give you some good money, 1400 CR+M SAT gets you full tuition. Very underrated school

I second South Carolina and CofC. They sound like really cool schools and USC gives out pretty good OOS aid. And CofC is close to the beach, and Chucktown sounds really cool. FSU also seems like a fun school, I’ll probably apply there.

How do you know the 2070 doesn’t yield over 1400 M+V? My son’s similar score did. I know kids who got into Vanderbilt and Emory- unhooked- with 1400 SATs. It’s not a given, but it isn’t like applying to Harvard.

ehhh no to University of South Carolina and Alabama…

I don’t want to go to a state school in the south besides like Charleston or UGA, I don’t want the school to be THAT southern.

any other suggestions?

So far in the south i’m thinking
-UGA, Emory, Charleston, SMU, Miami, Furman
