I go to a private school in New England and everyone refers to USC as "Southern California." That's all. "Oh, you applied to Southern California? Great."

On my school's guidance website, it says that students have been accepted to schools like "Cornell, Harvard, Southern California and Amherst."

But I'm guessing USC is the most popular name. I've heard some people call USC "SC," though.

What's most common? Are all names interchangeable? Sorry for the dumb question!

Here in So Cal people refer to USC as “USC” or “SC” pretty much interchangeably.
I’m not sure I’ve ever heard it it called “Southern California” here actually.
And thats not a dumb question at all :)

USC or SC for the most part. I’m in MA and I’ve had more than a few people ask, “Oh, you want to go to South Carolina?” No…
My mom, who hails from LA, calls it “Southern Cal” occasionally.

USC likes to be called USC and SC the most. They hate Southern Cal in general, because it really isn’t specific enough. However, I do think it is common outside of CA to call it that.

USC actually requests that media avoid use of “Southern Cal” and “SC” - their preferred official names are “USC”, “University of Southern California”, and “Southern California” (I think)
