Hi, I'm looking to transfer from a community college to a good southern california college/university for stage managing. I was thinking about applying to Cal State Long Beach and Fullerton. My heart has always been set on UCLA because I've heard great things baout their theater program. But after reading a description on there website about their technical theater program, I'm not sure its the place I should be going for stage managing. It seems more like a great school for someone trying to pursue acting as a career. If anyone can offer some incite on the matter or just some other suggestions as to another school I should be looking into I'd really appreciate it. It would have to be in California and hopefully Southern Cali as I'm in no position to afford out of state colleges or universities, or even Northern California schools.

I'm the first in my family to transfer to a UC/CSU and I'm not sure what I'm doing or what I should be looking for in a school. lol. Pathetic? Absolutely. Please help!

Why would you, as a college student, choose such a narrow focus in your career?

Also, UCLA’s reputation as a school will open a lot more doors for you than CSLB or CSF, regardless of whether you end up pursuing stage managing or something else

Would it make sense, both from a preparation standpoint and from the standpoint of making career connections, to get a Theatre degree in your bachelor’s program and then go on for an MFA in Stage Management? I’d think that qualified students with theatre tech backgrounds could get grad assistantships that would pay most of the cost of their Masters programs. And assuming that you didn’t do both degrees at the same place, you’d have the benefit of both programs’ professional networks.

People who are interested in technical theater and people who are interested in theater performance seem to be made of completely different stuff. Happykid is a Tech Theater major at her community college here in Maryland, so it doesn’t surprise me at all that Serenity44 is focused on Stage Management already.
