Just wanted to pass on that my D got a letter today inviting her to the above at a local hotel. The colleges in the consortium are:
Agnes Scott, Davidson, Emory, Furman, Hollins (Roanoke, VA), Rhodes, Rice, SMU, Stetson (Deland, FL), TCU, Trinity in San Antonio, Tulane, Miami (FL), U of Richmond, Univ of the South, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and Washington and Lee. What an eclectic mix!

That's a great group of schools . At one point or another all have been considered by D (except Agnes Scott and Hollins, both wonderful BTW) and two are still on the list. I think it could be a a great event.

Sounds like an excellent program! I wish something similar had been offered in our snow-ridden corner of the world last year, since my d wound up applying to 2 schools on that list and considered several others. Many kids in the snow belt at least think about choosing a college in the south. Our local college fairs were simply that - local - and we didn't even attend any after d finished 10th grade, since she knew she didn't want a school in New York or the bordering states. quiltguru, does your d plan to accept the invitation? If so, I hope you can post a brief description.

I'd like to attend that group - D will be applying to several. I wonder where they will be going?

My daughter got the same letter, but since she's photo-sensitive, she won't consider anything further south than Maryland :(. When I get home tonight, I'll dig out the letter and see if they mention where else the tour will be going.

What an excellent idea and a great collaboration.

Miami sort of sticks out for me....I mean, it seems the odd one in that lot, but I confess I don't know much about it beyond sports scandals. LOL

Count another person that would be interested in hearing if they are heading to the Mid-Atlantic area. Any info would be appreciated, and sorry if I've missed it -- Man, it's hard catching up after a week of no computer access. But the vacation was worth it!

I'd like to attend that group solely in the hope that the Dean of Admissions for Rhodes showed up and I'd get to meet him --> Dave Wottle, Olympic gold medalist in track and field in 1972 and one of my all-time favorite track athletes.

Quiltguru - let me know whether he attends.

coureur, me too! It is a riot remembering his stylish ball cap and his coming from oh so far back. I have told my daughter all the stories. When D was visiting Rhodes for the first time as a soph, I approached the admissions counter and asked, "Is your Dave Wottle THE..." That's as far as I got . She said. "Yes he is. It's a wonder how many of you (old guys , I assume) remember him". Remember him! I can see him racing. Behind the next to the last guy by twenty yards and then with about 150 yards to go (maybe less) here he comes and by the time they make the turn the race is on. It was so much fun for the announcers. He sure made it fun to watch.

I think it was actually a golf cap.

I saw him run in person once - he beat Steve Prefontaine in the mile with a great time, something like 3:53. Ran him down off the last turn -just like always. At that time it made Wottle the third best performer in the mile of all time, behind only Jim Ryun and Kip Keino. That race was also Pre's only defeat on his home track - Oregon's Hayward Field.

Golf cap. Ball cap. Gimmee cap. Whatever. It was an endearing trademark. I liked him best at the half, myself.

Dave Wottle is the Dean of Admissions at Rhodes?????!!!!!! Cool. We weren't planning to go to the meeting (D thinks any school south of the Mason-Dixon line is a breeding ground for male chauvinist pigs and definitely doesn't like the heat...sweating is against her religion unless she's dancing), but maybe I'll go just to meet him.

He's very nice, and seems to take awe-struck parents (and grandparents!) in stride.

OMG- Dave Wottle! Is there a way I can MAKE S go visit Rhodes! What an awesome man.

I liked him best at the half, myself.<<

I did too, but for a long time he considered himself to be a miler. He claimed not to know much about the half, how to run it properly, and who the stars were. He entered the 800 at the '72 Olympic trials on the advice of his coach who wanted him to get some competition under his belt prior to his real event. After he won the race, beating Jim Ryun and tying the world record in the process, it became apparent that the 800 was his real event.

but, the real question is does Dave show up at the info sessions in a golf cap? Or, is it a hook if a kid shows up in in a white golf cap, and sits all the way in the back?

I'm trying to get S to go to the info sesson so I can report back to y'all. haha

Sorry, but he does not wear the golf cap. I've only seen him in a suit and tie.

All this Dave Wottle fan club stuff is hilarious!

I'm just glad to know that there is career hope for S after he retires from competitive running!

Agnes Scott is one of the colleges on my 'do over list' - you know, the one where, armed with all this knowledge about education that I didn't have when I actually went to college, I get to go back and time and redo my college choices.

You can always tell the women that went to Agnes Scott - they do phenomenal things as adults, and make it look so easy!

lderochi, my DD attended this consortium 2 years ago at a hotel in Conshohoken (outside of Philly). This after she had applied to Wake Forest SCED. I believe the invite arrived in the mail sometime in September. Very nice presentations by all colleges involved in this session. She was already hooked on WF and is now very happily beginning her sophomore year there.
