Southern Culture??

I'm interested in Florida State, but I'm not sure if I could live in the South. I have been to Nashville and I wasn't impressed with the confederate flags, country music, hicks, and the backwards atmosphere.

I was wondering if FSU encompasses this atmosphere? Is Tallahassee a Southern-like city?

Thanks

You need to visit because I think you will find there is a lot of diversity in the campus population and city.

I haven't been to Tallahassee in a long time (I grew up near there in the beach areas) but from what I know, it in no way was similar to Nashville. My son is also considering going to FSU (music) and we're really looking forward to visiting the area.

btw, we have a lot of hicks here in Chicago - it's all relative.

Tallahassee is Southern, no doubt about it. But it's also one of the most liberal cities in Florida, and I don't mean Dixiecrats. I mean blue state liberal Democrats.

I suggest driving to Tallahassee and looking around then driving to Perry, Florida and making a comparison. Perry is much more pickup truck territory. The pickups in Tallahassee are likely to have little or no mud and be more like Chevy Avalanches than Ford F250s, if you understand my meaning. :)

If music is what you want, FSU's the best in Florida. Very tough program, though.

I'm not really worried about their conservative political views. I would actually consider myself politically conservative. I just don't want to be surrounded by the confederate flag and backward hicks.

And I live in California, so visiting FSU isn't an option...at least until next year, assuming I'm seriously considering the school.

Thanks for the help.

Tallahassee is not your typical southern city. It's a college town with students from all over the country and the world. A huge part of the student body is from South Florida(Miami area), which is not at all "southern". Also Tallahassee is nothing like Nashville, not even close. To answer your question, you won't be surrounded by confederate flag and backward hicks. Actually, I think you'll would find the opossite.

As a side note, one of the reasons why FSU was a better fit for the ACC and not the SEC its because of it's campus culture. FSU is a type of "southern" comparable to UNC or UVA. Not the "southern" as in Ole Miss, Alabama, or Arkansas.

^ Good one.

I've been a student at FSU for almost 3 years and have had only one encounter with a racist (I hate this term) "hick." Other than that, the town is not too southern or etc. Just be warned though that if you're Hispanic, Middle Eastern, or any other minority other than White or African American, you will be somewhat of an outsider.

Please explain what you mean by "outsider". Hispanics make up a significant part of the FSU student population, virtually as much as African Americans. Virtually all "minority" groups appear from the link below to be increasing.

See: http://www.ir.fsu.edu/Performance_Indicators/Student/S09.pdf

I know that Hispanics make up a big part of the FSU population (I am Hispanic myself too, by the way). What I meant by "outsider" is by comparing yourself to your peers in class. In all of my classes there have been only one or two individuals of any given minority. I know that there are things around campus for each type of minority possible (I myself am part of the Hispanic Student Union), but I just meant that in relation to other students in one's specific classroom.
