Southern Illinois University

Does anyone have any information regarding the school? I would like to send my daughter there because they have a program for LD (Learning Disabled students---- does anyone know anything about this? Any info would be greatly appreciated

Also, is anyone aware of any other Illinois Universities that offer similiar programs for Learning Disabled Students?

Thank You

The school is fairly isolated (Carbondale isn't a very happening place), but they have a pretty good basketball program, they're known for their aviation department....that's about all I can say. They have a cool name, the Salukis. I really can't tell you much about programs for LD students. They're not very advertised to the general college-bound student.

I was talking with a colleague this afternoon whose son is a freshman and is in the ACHIEVE program at SIU. They are pleased with the help that he is getting, although he doesn't use the program as much as they would wish.

I spoke with their director at a college fair. I got the impression that they have excellent support for the LD student who can make appointments and follow through on them. But the AD/HD student who has poor organization and time management could slip through the cracks.

But they are trying to address the AD/HD population--he said that they have tried to learn from Landmark and have incorporated parts of their program. And I think I read somewhere that SIU was trying to put an Aspergers program in place.

DePaul and Roosevelt both have LD programs--but I don't know anything about them.

My daughter is LD and is currently a freshman at WVHS in Aurora, IL. She does have a support teacher who helps her. I believe that if she was accepted at SIU and into this program she would participate in this program. She would follow thru with all her appointments because she knows that mom and dad are on her case.

Do you know if the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign have a similiar program and if so, do they hold their admission standards for LD students differently than regular students? She loves Illinois, but I am not sure if she would get in.

How would I best prepare her for the ACT?

I attend SIUE. I'm going to transfer to U of I though.

It is a really cheap school, community college cheap.

Why are you transferring? Is the SIU system bad?

I dont know where you got the idea that it wasnt a happening place at, but you are wrong. Its probably one of the most notoious party colleges in the united states actually. I have friends that go there and the place has a HUGE reputation for partying, as far as the academic programs, they are nice. MY dad attended the law school and is now a circuit judge. Im going to SIU Edwardsville , im trying to decide between the two for sure though, they are nice schools though.

U of I is an AWESOME school though its difficult to get into right off

Salukis, baby!
