Southern Ivies --- Please Chance Me

I thank you in advance for reading my lengthy post. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Please excuse me if my resume sounds in any way pompous, but it is difficult to sound humble in these sorts of things.
Again, thanks!

- I plan to pursue graduate study in American history, the social sciences (specifically politics) and law.
- I then hope to use my history background to become a lawyer or somehow involved in politics.

Emory
Oxford at Emory
Washington & Lee
Davidson
UVA
UNC
Wake Forest
Rice
Richmond
UT - Austin
Rhodes
Sewanee
UGA
Tulane

As you all know, it is difficult to determine once's chances by simply viewing an online profile. Even a simple "ballpark" estimate would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

bump…

defenitely qualified for UGA RD!

can you list what the APs were and what your scores are when you get them back? that would help, especially for demonstrating your interest in history. and list what APs you’re taking next year too. also this doesn’t sound pompous at all. don’t worry about that here, never be overly modest on a college resume. it’s not much help imo

continuing, idk much about some of the schools you listed so I’ll do the ones I know.

Vanderbilt - low/mid reach
UNC (if it’s Chapel Hill) - high reach (they have to take a high % of each incoming class from NC as part of their charter)
UVA - low/mid reach
Tulane - match
Rice - low/mid reach
UT Austin - low reach/high match
UGA - match/safety
sewanee - safety

chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1358671-chance-me-cs-schools-top-schools-will-chance-back.html

depends on your essays…it’s pretty subjective

Bump

Are you planning to re-take the SAT? You have some great stats and EC’s but the math is low and could be a negative for you. In my opinion you need to improve the math score as I think that will hurt you at schools such as Vanderbilt, Emory,Tulane, Rice, Wake, Washington & Lee, and Davidson. You should look at the common data sets for each of the schools that are of interest to you ( ex: google “Common Data Set Emory”). Read through these reports and you will be able to figure out how your stats compare to those in the applicant pool for each institution. These reports are full of very good information.

Vanderbilt- reach
Emory- reach
Oxford at Emory- lower reach
Washington & Lee
Davidson
UVA- lower reach
UNC- high reach (instate %)
Wake Forest- reach
Rice- reach
Richmond
UT - Austin- high reach (8% rule)
Rhodes
Sewanee
UGA- Safety
Tulane- Match

Assuming SAT does not improve, here are my estimates (sorry cannot be more positive, but many of these schools reject most applicants talented in one area but who lack stellar grades (3.9 to 4.0 UW) and overall SATs)

Vanderbilt – virtually no chance
Emory – high reach (less than 10%)
Oxford at Emory – match (50-75%)
Washington & Lee – reach (less than 25%)
Davidson – reach
UVA – virtually no chance OOS
UNC – virtually no chance OOS
Wake Forest – reach
Rice – virtually no chance
Richmond – near reach (33 to 50%)
UT - Austin – virtually no chance OOS (due to requirements that it accept top 10% students in state)
Rhodes – match
Sewanee – match
UGA – safety
Tulane – match

You might also consider new college of florida, stetson, and hendrix.

I know a number of kids with high stats who were waitlisted at Emory and Vandy this year.

They are evidently getting even tougher to get into.

My Apartment this year were U.S. History, English, and U.S. Govt.
Next year my Apartment will be Econ, Euro, Geography, and Literature.

If I retake the SATs and achieve a score of above 600 on math, how would that effect my chances?

Thanks

Wake Forest is SAT optional. So, based on that and the fact that your HS resume (excluding standardized tests) is better than my son’s was, I’d say Wake is a nice firm match for you. Just make sure you do an interview! They’re VERY important.

My son was also admitted to Richmond. (1340 SAT and 29 ACT) So, that’s probably a high match/low reach for you.

Other than those 2 schools, I don’t have enough expereince to offer an opinion. Good luck! :)

Thanks for all the inputs so far. In my previous post, I meant to say “APs” - not ‘Apartments’

Update:
Final GPA came in at 3.89
AP SCORES:
U.S. History: 5
Engl. Language: 5
U.S. Government: 5
Comparative Politics: 5

Obviously good news, but I’m not sure if this affects anything.

Thanks

I’d retake the SAT and aim for a 700 in math and maybe slight improvement in reading as well. Or try the ACT.

I found myself in a similar boat as you about a year ago. I too went to a southern private feeder school for the southern ivies. For schools like Washington & Lee and Davidson (got accepted), they really look for interest and also connections and athletic recruits. My family is pretty tied to one of those liberal arts schools, so I didn’t really have any doubt over possible rejection. Good luck dude, and definitely improve that SAT.

What is your class rank or estimated percentile? Your gpa doesn’t tell us much as we dot know your schools grading structure.

You should look at William & Mary. They have a top History undergrad program and look beyond test scores to the complete applicant. Most difficult to be admitted but you should look at this school. Also look at Furman. Great school but easier to be admitted than others on your list.

Thanks for the replies so far but I don’t think you all are being accurate in your predictions. Based on where kids from my school have gone in the past, and what my both my college guidance couselors say, UT, Wake, Richmond, Oxford, and W&L are all genuine matches. I was looking more for people to give me inputs on my reach schools. I would be VERY surprised if I did not get into the schools I just mentioned, as kids with much lower stats (from my school) have gotten in them just last year. Thanks anyway though.

I just reread my post, and I hope I’m not sounding too sensitive. I earnestly do appreciate everyone’s responses. It is just that I am fairly confident about most of the schools on my list. It was just the ones at the top I needed opinions on, and I believe I got them. Thank you all.
