Does anyone sense that the recent election may have soured many people on Southern/Red State schools?
My daughter’s friends have all been “shocked” and dismissive of her interest in even top schools like Vanderbilt, Wake, and Duke.
A friend of mine whose daughter is actively engaged in finding schools to apply to (major procrastinator) refuses to apply to ANY schools in Red states-actually checks the electoral college map.
More opportunity for my kids. maybe --that is, if the high performing kids from CA especially, are looking elsewhere.

Ha! Does she check the color of the counties of her list-schools in her favored blue states?

I attend a private Catholic school in the Bay Area and I would agree that most of the students are applying to CA schools, but I think that there is a certain arrogance about it. Like "we are the smartest, most enlightened region in the country why would we go anywhere else? This really annoys me.
My sister goes to Vanderbilt with fantastic financial aid and my friends say things like “Why would she want to go there…I mean isn’t the South all racist?” These are the kids that should get out of here for a while…Anywhere.

??? Are you the parent or student???
Not mention that most colleges in red states are in blue counties.
Could be. I don’t know if “most”, but maybe many.
Are all of these Red State Avoiders now not applying to UMich?
Dismissing North Carolina schools seems especially absurd given that it is likely to be a swing state in the next presidential election. You can stay in California or some other solidly blue state or you can go to college in a place where your vote could have significant meaning!
