Southern Schools

Hi! I am currently a senior in high school and am hoping to major in MT or Acting. I have been looking for schools close to home (the South) with a strong theater program, but am having trouble. I have a 3.7 GPA and a 31 ACT score. I would like to go to a school that is medium sized, and not as competitive as schools like BOCO, UMich, etc... I would appreciate any help! Thanks!

Have you looked at Elon in N. Carolina or James Madison U in Harrisonburg, VA? I don't know when you say close to home, the South, how large an area you are looking for. Also check out this list as it might help to show you some schools to research.

Good Luck :)

If you are interested in Texas, and theater as opposed to musical theater, I have heard good things about Texas State University in San Marcos. Their dance team was recently on America's Got Talent, also. Sam Houston State U in Huntsville has musical theater and UT is (or used to be) strong in theater.

Thanks so much for your input! I have been looking at Baylor and TCU, but I am eager to hear from a current/recent student of either program - or from someone who knows about their program!

How about Oklahoma Univ. and Okla. City U? They both have excellent MT programs. One is large and one is small.

I have heard good things about Sam Houston State, as well.

There are several in Florida...FSU, Miami, UCF, Florida. Belmont in Nashville has an MT program, and there are others in North Carolina, too, like Eastern and Western Carolina. My S also looked at Webster in St. Louis.

Your ACT score would automatically get you a merit scholarship at OCU of 10-12,000 a year. (It used to be 10,000, but I think they changed it to 12,000, but I'm not sure.) Check the web site.

I live somewhat near to TCU and Baylor. I do not hear people around here talk about Baylor as a theater school. I know some who have considered it for music (one graduated with piano major), but I don't know anything about its theater department. I know a music ed major at TCU. He likes it, but I don't know any details. Sorry I'm not much help!

The University of Alabama has a great theatre and dance program with a MT track. The head of their dance dept, Cornelius Carter, was featured on the cover of Dance Teacher magazine in the Sept. issue which is focused on top college dance programs, auditions, etc. The MT program at 'Bama is by audition. They accepted 8 students this year, I believe. The program is in its 5th year and it is growing. They added MT faculty and classes this year. They are doing 12 shows this year, plus other performance opportunities/black box theatre, etc. They also have a Senior Showcase and a summer stock theatre. Plus the U of A is one of the top 50 Liberal Arts Colleges in the U.S. It is respected academically, and has high standards. It also has some great academic scholarship opportunities you might look into, with your grades/ACT.

I coordinate the Musical Theatre Concentration at James Madison University. If you would like more information or have specific questions PM me.

My friend just transfered out of TCU because she said it was such a horrible program.

be warned

Yes, the warning should be to not judge a school by ONE person's experience. Garner perspectives, experiences and information from many associated with any college.

SMU in Dallas has one of the top theater programs in the country. They do not have musical theater, however. They also have lots of scholarship money for scores like yours.

Coastal Carolina University is an up and coming Musical Theatre Program with a strong new faculty, excellent facilities and a commitment to staying a small company of theatre artists working together. Coastal is located on the edge of Myrtle Beach, SC.

Ace of Spades, do you know any specific reasons your friend left TCU?

My son is at Elon and loves it!

He worked with a very talented student from TCU this summer, so I don't think it's so bad!

i'm kind of in the same boat, i'm a little older and i just changed my major to MT. anyone with any info on Texas State University or Sam Houston or any other school please PM me. i'm really confused and will appreciate any help. Thanks!

Western Kentucky University is a strong program. They offer a BFA in Musical Theatre. I have had the opportunity to work with graduates of the program and have been very impressed!

WKU Music Theatre

cemorgan, she said the only reason they actually have a musical theatre department there is because its required for specific funding for the school

they only put on one musical a year and you stop taking acting after junior year

ALSO you have to fight for your dance classes.

but seriously? if youre all for that thats fine,

and its fact and not opinion

like i said
be warned

Calling a program "horrible" is opinion, not fact.
