Southern vs Northeastern

I am from the Caribbean, my S who is 12 sat the SSAT in Nov. Received 99 overall. He has applied to Groton and Deerfield but is anxious about the distance and the weather - only child, never stayed away from home/family. I wondered whether there were any other good private schools closer to home. I read up about Indian Springs in Alabama, but no one seemed to have responded to me about it. I know no one who has been there and I would love to have some feedback as to whether it really compares well with the NE schools.

The schools in the northeast are generally much better than the one's in the south, because they've been around much longer, and have plenty of rich people giving them money. Some great southern school are Episcopal High, Baylor School, Asheville School, Stuart Hall, etc. I don't really know about Indian Springs.

Thanks esa. I will check out some of those. I would prefer a small school because my S does better when he is not one of a large crowd. He actually interviewed with Deerfield yesterday as they came here to do interviews. He seems to like it but being so far away at such a young age is worrying him and me too.

You should look into the Florida Institute of Technology, www.fit.edu. It is a fairly small school; however, it is expensive.

Thanks average. I looked but that seems to be a college setting. I was thinking of prep school.

Asheville School is small and excellent. I would highly recommend it.

"I was thinking of prep school."

Sorry about that.

Karen. I looked at Asheville - great site. Boardingschoolreview.com gives some feedback on this school and others suggested by esa too. Some NE schools have reps visiting and they look so good, it is hard to decide even given the constraints of distance/weather etc.
