Southwest is having a great fare sale right now

Anyone looking to fly into or out of B’ham between now and mid November might want to check it out. Southwest doesn’t charge a cancellation penalty so it’s safe to book now and change later if need be.

Obviously the sale ends before Thanksgiving. But anyone looking to fly down there for the start of classes or for a football weekend should consider booking their flight now. The only problem is Friday & Sunday travel isn’t part of the sale. I usually go down there on Thursdays anyway for game weekends. I guess this year I’ll just stay until Monday instead of Sunday. And since Tuscaloosa passed Sunday alcohol sales I think I’ll enjoy that extra day quite a bit :-)

BTW, AirTran is having the same sale if you’d rather fly into Atlanta for some reason.

AirTran also flies into Huntsville. No shuttle, but if you know someone headed that way it could be an option.

The other airlines should be matching these fares. I know that AA, Delta, US Airways, and United/Continental are matching to Seattle. Tickets that were $250 each way are down to $140 each way.

This fare sale is valid during Family Weekend and Fall Break.

Booked son’s flights to and from Chicago for fall break, leaving Wed night ($80) and returning Sunday ($181). Could have flown him back Sat for $80, but wanted to give him and us the extra time since we won’t be flying him back for Thanksgiving.

Also booked our flights to and from Birmingham for a visit the fourth weekend of Sept, flying out from Chicago Thursday evening and returning Monday, with flights being $80 for each way. Great deal.

I just booked my flights for the Arkansas & LSU game weekends. Same flights were around $500 yesterday.

I think I’ll take the $600 I just saved and donate it to one of the Atlantic City casinos :-)

^
Better spent on a ticket to The Book of Mormon, heh.

I’m seriously considering a mid-semester NY break just to see that and to run around the city for a day or two.

Matt & Trey don’t need my money any more than the casinos do  I do want to see that play though. That south park episode cracked me up.

I don’t get up to NYC near as much as I should beings it’s only a 3 hour drive away. But I have a blast every time I’m there.

If you get up there during a Bama game weekend. Be sure to watch the game with the UANYC alumni chapter. Great people and a great time.

Wow some great fares- $80 one way from Hartford to BHM on SW. That is three days off from work for H though- Thurs, Fri & Monday, plus two extra nights hotel. Hmmm we could make an extra long weekend out of it. Not sure what we would do in T-town for that many days though, I’m sure S will probably have dinner with us once and then possibly drop by the tailgate, that’s it. Considereding flying into Pensacola via Air Tran and having 2 beach days, but that is a 4 hour plus drive. But I’m still considering it.
Thanks for the info, these are some great fares.

i booked a flight back the morning of oct 31 (monday). kid might miss a class, but i think it wil be ok.

NJBama, you could buy yourself a nice trip to Las Vegas with that money.

kansasdem, that is a great idea. Of course, you could go to Atlantic City and see NJBama instead.

One benefit of living on the West Coast is that I can take the redeye back to Alabama at 11:00 PM Saturday night and arrive on Sunday morning, saving $100.

I’m in the process of buying tickets for move-in (not on sale), Family Weekend, and either Fall Break or Thanksgiving. I’m really tempted to fly somewhere random over fall break and stay there for more than 40 minutes.

Sweet Deal! Thanks
One way Louisville to Birmingham for $39.70

seatide - i wanna know why you fly all these random places!

“and stay there for more than 40 minutes” - what’s that all about?

I can’t decide. anyone know how long the sale runs? Also for the family weekend football game against NoTexas? what is the earliest they might have a game? We could possibly fly Sat-Mon for those $80 fares. Hotels have a 2 night min, but I think Sat/Sun nites would qualify and it might be less busy Sunday nite so we could have a nice dinner with S.

I believe the sale runs thru the 23rd. Good news? Was able to turn a 3 day Vegas trip into a 5 day trip and get some SW credits. Bad news? I have to see Barry Manilow

I’m guessing the North Texas game will be a ppv. So kickoff should be around 6pm. The SEC network picked up our game against Kent St and put it at 11:30. I can’t see them doing that again for North Texas.

The earliest possible gametime in any given week is 11:30am.

So most likely not an 11:30 game?
I guess if we book SW for Sat 6 am and we have to end up changing it at least we don’t lose the $$. We would miss the “beach” party friday night but that would be ok I think to save $200+.

Correct. I highly doubt it will be an 11:30am kickoff. You should be fine flying in that morning.

BTW, the sale ends tomorrow night.

Tx, I think that’s a plan.

Do all the hotels have a 2-night minimum? Capstone has reasonable rate for Sun nite if we could get another hotel for Sat nite. I’m not seeing anything.

Most have 2 night minimums on game weekends. I do see that the Sleep Inn has rooms for just Sat night though.

I stayed there once before. It’s not the Hotel Capstone or one of the better hotels in town but it’s decent and certainly ok for a night.

I’m with NJBama that the North Texas game will likely be in the evening. You could always fly in on Friday and stay in Birmingham to be sure, but I’d suggest saving the money and flying in as early on Saturday as you can.

MikeW, the way airfares are priced, it’s sometimes cheaper to combine two fares in order to get to your destination. This sometimes means that I fly through a hub twice in the same day. It also helps me retain my elite status. As for spending 40 minutes in a city, I have flown to Nashville and Boise only to get off the plane, use the restroom, buy a postcard, take a picture, and hop on the same plane back to the airline’s hub. It really helps that I will usually get upgraded to first class both ways, so it’s more of a catered 4 hour sightseeing trip.
