This forum doesn't exactly look very popular, but I thought I'd post here anyway just to see who's around. I'm applying to Southwestern for fall 2010... I'm fairly confident that I'll get in, but I was just curious and I had a few questions for current students/alumni/anyone who knows something about the college...

How big are/were your classes, really? I know that the student:teacher ratio is very good.

At this point I'm pretty familiar with the treacherous traffic on I-35 - does that void the convenience of being near Austin? Is Georgetown hard to navigate? I really am a very bad driver in traffic.

Is "Mouthwestern" as prominent as people seem to think? The entire student body is only a couple hundred students larger than that of my school (and I go to a "small" high school), and I'd hate for college to be an extension of high school...

How is Georgetown? I've read that it's somewhat conservative (or at least moreso than Austin, being a suburb). I'm pretty open-minded and I've lived in a very conservative place all my life. I'm just curious. What kinds of things can you do there?

Almost everywhere I've looked for information on Southwestern, I've found the acronym POK and I can't seem to find what it means. What does it stand for?

Any other information...

POK = Perspectives on Knowledge. POK-designated courses are (were?) certain courses used to fulfill part of the general education requirement at Southwestern. My D is applying for Fall 2010. We went down last week for her interview. She sat in on a class and enjoyed the lecture. Got a bit of a surprise when she was handed a pop quiz along with the rest of the class.

As a parent, my observations were that the students seemed friendly and very bright. The people in the admissions office were very nice. They arranged the class visit on short notice and seemed organized.

Please read over what I tried to cover there, and I will check back to see if you have any lingering questions. My friends and I had a wonderful time, and SU opened many professional, educational, and social doors for me.

I graduated from SU in 2002, but I currently work for another liberal arts college, so I think I have a pretty good vantage point to try to address your questions. I hope I can help give some candid advice!
