Space Still Available For Freshmen-Annual Survey Out Today

Today the National Association for College Admission Counseling released its annual Space Availability Survey. (See Space Availability Survey Results 2010 )

Although there are a number of colleges and universities with rolling admission or no closing application date that will accept applicants right up through the summer, the NACAC Space Availability Survey also includes some schools whose deadlines have passed but have discovered empty beds after the May 1 Candidates' Reply Date, which they don't expect to fill via a waitlist.

Each year I'm always surprised (so I probably shouldn't be by now ;)) to find the names of sought-after institutions on this list. Today, for example, I spotted frosh places at Lewis & Clark College, Drexel University, Drew University, Willamette University, and New College of Florida, among others.

So if you're a high school senior--or parent of one--who isn't all set for September, check out the NACAC list (but do be careful to distinguish between the colleges that have places for freshmen and those that have them only for transfers).

I am surprised that University of Florida (UF) has space available!

U. of Florida doesn’t have freshman spots.

Florida handles admissions differently, from what I have been told. I was told they don’t waitlist kids. With Florida you get:

1) Accepted for fall
2) Accepted for summer
3) Accepted for spring
4) Denied

After they get their May 1st responses then they will consider term change requests from students. Usually summer/spring students requesting to move to a fall start.

New College can be too selective and that’s probably why they have spots. I turned down my spot there even after they offered me a near full ride scholarship. UF c/o 201 instead!

Thank you for this post. I sent the link to my local public hs counseling office.

Interesting. There are some very good schools that list.

Some unknowns too ^^^ Vanguard University in California. Can you major in portfolio management there?

I can’t find Western Washington University and University of Washington. I am still waiting for both of their decisions. Got rejected by U San Francisco

Liberty U was still calling D last week ( and she hadn’t ever shown any interest!). I wonder if they finally filled up…

Keep in mind that even colleges that have enough applicants to fill their class will often pursue their top candidates via phone calls, etc.

Some schools are not listed, yet they are still taking apps. So, even if a school isn’t listed, email and ask if you’re interested.

And if a college has no closing deadline, you won’t find it listed here, but there should still be spaces available.

lol…I turned down UF for New College…to each their own (plus I can still look at UF for grad school)!

Wow, that’s a pretty long & impressive list! I know someone who was recently accepted w/in 2 weeks after application (after applying long after their deadline) to U Puget Sound with a significant merit award. She’s delighted & will be attending there!

U. of Puget Sound is another good school on the list that I didn’t specifically mention earlier. They’re listing “limited” spaces, so anyone interested better jump on that today!

Is a specific number attached to ‘limited’ ?

My S liked Drexel and would have attended, but they didn’t give him enough aid for us to afford it.
