spam filter kicks in when editing posts?

I understand the rationale for the 3 minute block is someone is just blasting away posts. However it seems to be blind to the difference between people posting all over the place and people editing a single comment.

Often I post, re-read the post to make sure I like what it says, then realize I should add something else or that I should reword it a bit. Unfortunately if I make 2 edits in less than a minute the spam filter kicks in.

Can the filter be made a little smarter? It seems like each account has fields associated with it of past post times. When a post is submitted and the previous two are within a minute then the 3rd is blocked. It seems like a simple matter of programming to adjust the rule to allow posts if the new post being submitted is an edit of one of those previous two posts.

FWIW, the spam filter also kicks in if you report two spammers in rapid succession. /Headdesk

They are working on it…the editing your own post issue.

Happened to me too.

Just tripped me as well. :frowning:

Happened to me again last night.

Guys, the tech team deployed a fix for this issue. Can you please confirm the issue is now fixed? Thanks a lot!

This is a test of the editing system.

First edit…

Second edit…

Third edit…

Fourth edit…

I did all four of those edits in pretty rapid succession and didn’t get the spam block.

@CCadmin_Sorin

Awesome! Thanks, @thumper1.

I know triggering the spam blocker with flags / reports is a separate issue, but I got hit with it tonight again.

@DiotimaDM, thanks for reporting! Is this is a general issue now? Did this happen to anyone else? Thanks!

I’ll try with this post…I will edit it and see what happens.

First edit.

Second edit.

Third edit.

Fourth edit.

Ok…I didn’t get the spam filter when editing.

@CCadmin_Sorin

@DiotimaDM did you mean you got hit with the spam block after flagging? Or after editing?

I tested just now (win10 / Mozilla) by flagging the two posts directly above me. The first flag went through ust fine, but the second one resulted in a red spam block message.

You have posted 1 times within 60 seconds. A spam block is now in effect on your account. You must wait at least 300 seconds before attempting to post again.

@DiotimaDM

Yes…if you flag too many posts in a short period of time…like two…you will,get a five minute spam block. This happens to everyone…not just you.

Exactly, which is why I’m asking if this is a bug or a feature. :slight_smile:

Whom this really hurts is the mods. If I have two legitimate reports to send and the second blocks me for five minutes, I’m not waiting around for that block to be over. I log out and go to another website. You never get that second flag, even if it would have been helpful.

@bodangles if I think that second post is really important…like spam or total dishonesty…I send a PM to a moderator. That doesn’t get me the spam block!

@DiotimaDM, thanks for further explaining the issue. As @thumper1 said, this is actually a setting that we, for the moment, cannot adjust. Her suggestion is great, just PM a mod or wait a few seconds before flagging a second post. Thanks a lot!

I would add that this is one of the few situations in which we will accept PMs. We prefer that people report each post using the flagging feature so that it’s recorded officially and all of the moderators see it.
