Spanish 1-6

Does anyone know how to convert high school Spanish classes to UCLA Spanish classes? For example, would taking Spanish 3 (in hs) mean you can enroll in Spanish 4 (Inter. Spanish)?

Which one would you need to take to satisfy the foreign language requirement? Or is the only way you can satisfy that requirement to take the test?

Thanks!

In order to satisfy the requirement you must complete a year's worth of a foreign language at the college level (3 quarters or Spanish 1-3 here at UCLA.) You're best bet would be to take the placement exam and attempt to pass out. Once upon a time, students could self-place themselves in whichever spanish level they wanted to but, it changed a few years ago so now you have to take the placement exam UNLESS you want to start from Spanish 1 (or have fulfilled the requirement some other way like at a community college.)

If I don't want to take the test, could I just take a Spanish 3 class? (Assuming I've already taken 2 years of Spanish)

No, unless you want to start with Spanish 1 you still have to take the test to see what level you're at (like say somebody took two years of Spanish in high school, but they took it freshman and sophomore years and haven't studied it since then, that doesn't mean they're necessarily ready for Spanish 3 here). But the Spanish test at orientation is totally painless- on the computer, multiple choice, takes like 30 minutes tops (and if you're good at Spanish you'll probably even pass out of the foreign language requirement- I didn't take Spanish my senior year of high school so I'd forgotten a ton of stuff and I still passed into Spanish 3 and was really close to getting into Spanish 4 and passing out of the req.)

so, if I took spanish 1,2,3 and AP in high school (but no AP test) would I still need to take placement exam, because when I signed up for orientation I was not given the option to take the spanish one.

I don't know... I know if you get a 3 on the AP test you pass out of the req., but I don't know if it counts if you just took the class. You might have to ask someone about that at orientation.

Are there any topics in specific (like subjunctive or another aspect of grammar) that one should especially study for the Spanish placement test? Is it possible to test out of the foreign language requirement for English majors (Spanish 1-5 in my case, or 5 quarters of foreign language) on the placement test? What class should I sign up for if I want to take a Spanish class first quarter, since the placement test is after orientation?

FYI, I got through Spanish 5 AP in high school, but did not take the AP test.

I got a 3 on the AP test, and was placed in Spanish 5.
