Spanish Club - A Discussion on How to Run a Spanish Club

Hi Everyone,

This year has been the first year our school has made a serious attempt at creating and running a Spanish Club. I find that foreign language clubs in general are difficult to run because you have to engage students' interest in a subject that many often struggle with or do not enjoy. From a personal perspective, Spanish is my passion, and I hope to go on to do something in college with it (We'll see), but I'd really like to express my enthusiasm through the club and get others interested in Spanish Language, Culture, and Literature as well.

A few facts on our Spanish Club this year. It's quite small as of now. We have a total of 5 members, but are trying to get more members through our end-of-the-year fiesta. This year we made Sugar Skulls for el Dia de los Muertos, and sold them at lunches, sold churros after school and at parent-teacher conferences to raise money for the club and Hispanic charities. We also participated in the annual International Festival where we sold food, paper flowers, and had a piñata. The money made went toward the building of a well in a third world country.

Currently, we are planning our end of the year party in celebration of this year, and to attract more members. Our plan is to have traditional food (as food always attracts students :), play music, and sell t-shirts.

I appeal to members' experience and expertise in the area of Spanish Club to gain some ideas on how to run a club. Ideas on events, what we can do during meetings. What worked/didn't work for clubs at other high schools. And any suggestions you may have on publicizing, creating enthusiasm, and getting members for the club. Also any suggestions for our end of the year party?

I'd really appreciate any advice you can give.
Thanks!
