Hi! I’m a first year at Emory studying Neuroscience. I took Spanish until 11th grade (didn’t want to take AP) and I’m wondering if its helpful to take Spanish in college now. Will it really affect my med school admission?
@northview98 : Huh? A single non-STEM or non-English class affecting your medical school admission? Who is telling you stuff like that? Take whatever language you want. It wouldn’t affect your admission but for those who aren’t great at Spanish (like if you find your current experience makes you solid, take something you like), it could be helpful if they want to end up working or doing residencies in areas serving a high Hispanic population. Please do not think something as petty as that will effect your admissions. Worry about their STEM and English requirements and craft a schedule that maximizes your own education and experience in everything else.
It is your education, please do not let the med. school admission process take control over most of it. Also, another reason to continue taking Spanish is if you want to achieve a higher level of it (like up to 3-400) and then go abroad. Otherwise, if you prefer to begin learning other languages, please do so.
Thank you @bernie12 ! I have heard that from a handful of people and I was very confused about how not taking a foreign language could hurt my admission.
@northview98 : You have to take a foreign language as part of Emory’s GERs. Take whatever you want though. Are you at Emory or North Carolina? At Emory undergrads must fulfill 2 semesters of a language
