does anyone have any suggestions for a very bright kid (not me, haha, my son) who is majoring in SPANISH, with regard to a career path? he will probably double major. he is thinking of a minor in french, but we are thinking that may limit career options if he chooses not to also major in teaching, translation...

he may look into a minor in something which would make him more marketable and he'd like a career where he could use his vocation to do mission work at times. does anyone know about majoring in INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES in which spanish is involved? thanks :)

He should do an interdisciplinary major in Latin American Studies with a second major or a minor in a field like business or economics. Instead of French, learn Portuguese.
Other options would depend on the particular school he attends.

How about International Relations/International Studies/Global Studies, or a major of that family? Many schools offer these interdisciplinary majors, and they are very flexible. Usually they allow a focus or concentration on a certain region (for your son, likely Latin America) as well as a more specific focus of the broadly defined major (Economics and politics, security, development, global health, etc). Depending on the school, it’s usually fairly easy to double-major in IR/IS and a language because many IR/IS programs have language requirements anyway. Good luck to your son!

thank you to both of you for your advice! i’ll pass this on to him. :)
