Spanish Major

alright so i just got into an argument with my dad because i LOVE spanish and want to major in that plus a double in either international relations, economoics, or poly sci. he says that spanish was too limiting for me to apply to schools with (i wrote on almost all that i want to major in span bc thats the only one im absolutely sure of). he says i should have applied as one of the others bc theyre more selective.
1. what are things i can do with a spanish major after i graduate? (my career goals are to work as a foreign service officer for the state dept....my dream is to live in madrid bc it is literally the prettiest city in the world and i freakin love the place) (another option for me that i really like is possibly working for the UN doing something? i really like international stuff...) but i wanna know what else there is for me
2. also, if im accepted into the school as a spanish major, shouldnt it be (relatively) simple to add a major or switch, esp if its in the same school? (arts+sciences...)

responses are greatly appreciated :)

You can easily combine a Spanish major with something else, especially because it sounds as if you already know enough Spanish to get into the upper-level classes right away. A Spanish major is generally only 8-10 semester classes spread out over your whole college career–that averages between one and two of your four to five classes a semester. You should look for a school that offers strong study-abroad options in Spain or Latin America and plan to spend some time abroad.

At UVA, where I teach, many students combine Spanish majors with business/commerce, with education, or with international relations/politics, depending on what they want to do when they get out.

I doubt anybody’s going to care what you say you want to major in at the undergraduate admission stage, unless you’re applying for a specialized pre-professional program in nursing, engineering, or the like. In most colleges of arts and science, you don’t declare a major until the end of your sophomore year, and many kids change their minds multiple times in those first three/four semesters.

thats exactly what i was thinking…im in ap span right now and i travelled to spain over the summer (loved it) and a big part of my applications were strength of study abroad programs (big 10 schools seem to be really good w study abroad in general)

thanks for the response jingle!

hello!
i think it’s fantastic if you want to major in spanish. just wondering why is it you want to major in spanish? you don’t really need to major in it in order to live in any country or to have a specific job. you pretty much just need to be fluent, no need of going to college for that.

I majored in Spanish and then went to law school. 13 years later, my sister did the exact same thing. My D is entering college next Fall as a Spanish/Psychology double major and wants to go to medical school. The best advice I can give you is to major in something you love, and it sounds like you love Spanish.
