Spanish Options

D14 is not able to fit Spanish 3 into her schedule, but really wants to continue with the language. She has tried the independent study route, but is struggling with the lack of verbal interaction. We've looked at the local community college, but the courses are not offered in the evening or summer. We've also looked into some of the summer programs (Middlebury, Concordia, various university pre-college programs), but they are so expensive. Any other suggestions?

What about looking at another class in her schedule to take out and take online, etc.? Taking a foreign language as an independent study is difficult at best but maybe taking US History or something would work better.

That was my D last year. It is very difficult to do Spanish 3 off campus. She took it by “correspondence” but we had to have a tutor twice a week ($80 per week), she only got through the first semester in the course of the school year, and she barely passed the final.

Get a part-time job in the kitchen of any restaurant, anywhere.

@JHS - Ha! Now, how to word this on college applications? “Paid Language Immersion Experience”?

MImama–on the common app it just asks if you are fluent in speaking, reading, writing (all separate), it doesn’t ask WHERE you learned it :D.

As for the Concordia camps, if you don’t take the camps for college credit, they aren’t “that” expensive. She can gain fluency and possibly test out of several years of college Spanish by attending the camps, which amounts to the same thing for a lot less money.

Are there any private tutors in your area who are familiar with the school curriculum and/or with experience with other teaching materials? That might be an affordable way to go. You also could investigate Berlitz Virtual Classroom which offers live, small group instruction. I think that Rosetta Stone also has the option of live classes.

Any chance your D could skip Spanish 3 and fit Spanish 4 into her schedule? I moved from a HS which didn’t have a language program after freshman year. My senior year I would have been in independent study Spanish 3 but the Spanish 4 teacher allowed me into his class instead. I got an A. :D

Check to see if your state department of education offers virtual classes. VA does.
