Hi! I'm a high school junior in the Bay Area and I'm having a bit of trouble trying to figure out whether I should take Spanish 4 AP or AP Statistics next year as a senior. I want to go into engineering in college, and I'll be taking AP Physics and AP Calc BC next year, and I've also heard that Stats won't really help when it comes to engineering since it's more of something for business majors..
I've also heard Spanish is harder than Stats but it might be a good idea to take it and get my foreign language requirement out of the way with the college credit I can get from that class.
I've gotten As in all three years of Spanish I've taken so far, but I know the class would still be challenging...

Any recommendations would be much appreciated :)

Spanish, definitely.

Spanish. (Given your location, you may also have native/heritage speakers among your classmates to practice with.)

If your engineering major requires statistics, you will have to take a more in-depth statistics course using calculus, so the relatively low level AP statistics will not be of much use.

First, I’m an advocate for foreign language throughout high school whenever possible, so know that bias. ;)

Check with various schools you’ll be applying to. The most competitive schools will want 4 years of FL. Many engineering schools do not have a foreign language requirement (although they may want to see several years in hs for competitive admission). Depending on what type on engineering you’re planning on studying you may need to take Stats so look at curriculum and requirements. Also keep in mind that people do change their majors (thus FL is never wasted).

Bottom line, look at the schools you’re interested in as this can vary.

Colleges rarely award credit for AP stats but advancing in a foreign language may allow you to bypass your school’s language requirement. My S11 had to take 4 semesters of foreign language in college because he didn’t do enough in high school. Do AP Spanish.
