I just took the Spanish Placement Exam online, and I got a good enough score to place in Spanish 202. The only problem is, I think I got lucky because I really suck at Spanish and I don't know how I got it. I'm scared if I go into 202 I won't know what's going on... any suggestions?

Several years ago, my son's score placed him higher than his ability level. The problem is that this is a written test. He could read Spanish but couldn't understand the spoken language. He felt behind from the beginning. He was not allowed to drop back a level, so he switched to a new language and had to take four semesters. He was very successsful in these classes.

If you feel that you are totally misplaced, try contacting the Spanish Department. Otherwise, try taking the class. You just need one semester to complete the foreign language requirement. The only other option is to start a new language.

If you really think its a problem then go talk to the dept and they may bump you down a level. However, I'm in SPAN202 right now, and I can tell you it is really not that difficult.

What does the Spanish 202 class consist of? Is it a lot of paper writing and such?

No, the grading breaks down as follows:
Participation & Homework 10%
Tests 30%
Final exam 20%
Compositions 15%
Cultural Activities 10%
Oral exam 10%
Quizzes 5%

Really the only writing is the compositions which are in-class and are about 2 pages handwritten, double spaced. There are two of those and you have to do a one page double spaced write up on some cultural activity you go to.

Do you have to take a language at UVA? I was thinking of taking the SAT 2 for that because they said that you can pass the requirement with that. Also is 202 like equal to like AP Spanish. Thanks

if you are in the college and aren't echols then you must take a language. However you can place out of it with SATII or AP. And yes spanish 202 is like ap spanish. To place out of the requirement you would need a 4 or 5 on the ap test.

I am much better at reading Spanish than hearing it since my teacher in highschool hardly ever made us carry on conversations, we basically just read stories and did tests (which I still wasn't great at). I called the Spanish language office yesterday and the lady that answered the phone told me to e-mail the department but she didn't think I would be able to go down a level. I really suck at verb tenses the most.

Wahoo, how much of Spanish did you take in high school? I wish I would've purposely not done well on the test, but here's a lesson for all of you juniors and people who haven't taken the placement test yet.

i took latin in highschool, no previous spanish experience. So I've taken all 4 semesters here.

Wahoo, who is your span202 professor? Do you like him/her?

My TA is a guy named Matt Zugsay, I think he's awesome. He's really into teaching spanish and he enjoys it a lot, consequently the class is much more enjoyable. I think however that he's teaching span201 next semester. Others who I've heard are good are Bjelland, E. Smith, Gullick, Scavengelli, Hidalgo, & Echaverria.
