Anyone know if UMich offers study materials/guides for the spanish placement exam? I am transferring to UMich and my orientation is about 2 weeks away and i would like to place out of at least 2 semesters of spanish. Any tips or advice, or how difficult the actual exam is? Thanks all.

It's significantly easier than the AP exam, so any AP review materials would over-prepare you (which is usually a good thing). Just brush up on grammar and practice reading I guess.

Yeah....ditto that. But also...know that placement exams are designed to see where you are w/o a lot of preparation and study, so just do your best and relax. You'll be put where you should be.

KB

So if i place into the third semester, i only have to complete the third and fourth semester and im done with my language requirement correct?

that would be correct.

so then is it also possible to totally place out of the requirement all together? Thus making preparing for the exam rather beneficial?

well...now you are talking about a question of preference. I tend to prefer actually learning a language well...so I'd say take the test pretty much "cold". Others who view the language requirement as a nuisance say study your butt off so you don't have to take the classes.

What you want is up to you. But I'll say...as an RC spanish speaker, I've meet plenty of kids who LSA deems "proficient" who are not at all, but they "studied" for the test and did well. You may or may not be one of those kids...this is a judgement call on your part.

Thanks i appreciate your thoughts. Basically ive taken spanish 1 at my past university and found it to be pretty easy. My fear is that if i study to hard i may be placed into the fourth year of spanish at UMich and have a hard time keeping up. What do you think about that? Also ive heard spanish at UMich is really easy (class wise) would you as a spanish speaker agree with that?

i basically used www. l e a r n s p a n i s h. com, read through the tutorials. It isn't very hard to place out of all four semesters, esp if u've had a few years of study in HS or college.
