I am a current USC student in the palmetto college and I am due to graduate this August. I took Spanish 109 and 110 when I was 16 to count for high school and college credit. I thought that would be enough for most degrees at that time. The degree I ended up choosing a few years down the road requires Spanish 122 which I have not taken. I take all my classes online and it is very hard for me to go to a campus and take span 122 because I work full time. I am trying to take the Spanish placement exam at USC to try and place out of Spanish 122. I have been studying for a long time through Rosetta Stone and other resources but I want to make sure I pass because I only get one try. If I don’t pass I am not sure what I am going to do.
I wanted to see if anyone had taken the placement test recently and could give me some information about the test. How hard is it? How well did you do and what is your past experience in Spanish. I am currently half way through level 3 in Rosetta stone and know most of the tenses of verbs. Any help would be most appreciated!
I can tell you that the majority of students who finish the placement test only get a 2 or 3 on the exam. In order to place out of 122, you have to get a score of at least S5 which means finish Phase I of the test and then succesfully speaking well enough in phase II that you move on.
Even if you take the Phase II portion of the test (because you did well enough in reading/writing on Phase I), you could still end up being given a score of S3, which is placed into Spanish 122.
All I can say is just study as much as possible. The more important part right now is reading and writing. Speaking and listening are the second phase of the exam, but if your reading and writing skills are not up to par, then you won’t even make it that far. It is definitely possible to place out of Spanish 122, but you’ll need to make sure that your grammar and vocabulary are really strong.
Is there an on-line equivalent for Spanish 122 at another university from which USC would accept the transfer credit? Congratulations on persevering the difficult task of going to school and working full time.
I looked all over the place for a online class that would count but USC is very adamant about taking Span 122. Last summer I went through getting Span 201 approved instead of Span 122 because it is a higher level class and my technical college near me offers it but they did not approve it. My adviser was surprised because she thought they would. Midlands tech does offer it but I don’t live near there. I live in Charlotte, NC. Has anybody taken the Spanish placement test?
You might have to drive across the state line where schools have agreements about accepting credits. Maybe check to see if Winthrop offers anything that would transfer.
I would go talk with USC. Strangely, USC upstate numbers their courses differently but they have a class that seems at same level that is virtual classroom which might be possibility. Some virtual classes expect you to be online at a specific time and that may not work.
They offer 122 during the May term starting at 3:30 in the afternoon. I know you said you work full time, but is there any way to work this in since only for 3 weeks and it would complete your degree? It’s a little further than Rock Hill so not sure what that means for you - I guess it depends on what side of Charlotte you live on and where you work (could you adjust hours or take some vacation time)
I went to YorkTech which is in Rock Hill, SC and has an agreement with USC but does not offer SPAN 122. I saw that section at USC Union a week ago and is probably what I will have to do if I do not pass. It will suck so hopefully I pass the placement exam.
Anyone out there actually taken the Spanish placement test and can offer any advice about what will be tested?
My daughter is also trying to test put or take two classes and we were just talking about this on the phone today. We live in Ohio and she was looking at some transfer list that USC puts out and she said they take Sinclair Community College online Spanish 122 We are from Ohio so it will be cheap for us. Take a look at the list and see if you see it. Sinclair has it online too.
