I am in New York and I am doing really well in Spanish (probably 99/100 on the report card for the term). Does anyone know if the New York Regents preparatory (regular honors course) class is good preparation for the Spanish SAT II? I would love to take it, but I would like to know how much self-studying I am going to have to do. Anybody (NOT SPANISH NATIVE) perform well based on the knowledge received from just taking a regular Spanish (honors class preferably) class? Thank you!

I don't know what the New York Regents exam is like, but I found the Spanish SAT II quite easy when I took it at the beginning of my sixth year of Spanish. Of course, the number of year's you've taken Spanish is very important. At least at my school, there is very little difference between regular and honors Spanish classes. The SAT II requires a good understanding of tenses, a pretty good vocabulary, and considerable reading comprehension skills.

Well, I'm in Spanish IV right now (so my 5th year of spanish overall) and my teacher said I'd be able to do well on the SAT II by the end of the year. I'm definetely going to study a bit, but I think you'll be fine.

I took it after my 5th year of honors spanish (I never had less than a 98) and got a 650. I retook it(i'm going to major in spanish) after the first quarter of my 6th year, after I had taken an advanced college course and got a 740.

The test itself isn't very hard, but the curve is really really harsh because of all the native speakers who take it and all get 800s. If you take it, make sure you know all forms of the subjunctive and pronouns(se vs. le vs. lo/la(s), etc.)/prepositions(a big one is por vs para) really well.

Buena suerte!

I got a 730 after Spanish III and using the Barron's book (to practice verb tenses.) I'm not technically a native speaker, but I did have a strong background in it before taking the 3 classes.

You should do fine. Good luck. :)

I took the Spanish SAT II (without Listening) at the end of my junior year after taking AP Spanish Language that year and honors in the previous two years. I got a 770 without studying at all, but that might be because I had studied Spanish in middle school, so I was strong in verb conjugation, reading comprehension, etc. Good luck!
