I'm applying to MMLA, a language summer program run through Middlebury College, and I am having difficulty deciding between Spanish, French, and Arabic. I'm in Spanish I and French II as a freshman right now, and by attending Middlebury I could skip a year in either language. If I were to do French, I would be taking AP French Literature by my junior year. If I were to take Spanish I could get up to AP Spanish Literature by senior year.

Arabic is not offered by my school, but I really love the language and would like to work for the State Department or the CIA one day, so this would help a lot.

I like French more than Spanish, but I don't know what to do!

What would you guys do?

Thanks

if you want to get into an ap class (college credit), why not just go to a summer school program at a college and get language credits there? i hear that summer school programs are less of a hassle in getting college credit; ie, youre final is what your professor taught, not what collegeboard wants you to be taught.

personally, i'd go with what you love. i wanted to to arabic, but i chose chinese because i saw more use out of it since i'd like to go into business/economics/public policy. then again, the middle east is diversifying its interests since oil wont be around forever. arabic ended up being my second choice, but i think i might call up and change it. as im writing this im becoming more and more interested in the prospect of learning arabic over chinese. anyway, i hope i helped.

Are you doing MMLA, too?

I'm not looking for college credit since I plan on taking as many foreign language classes as I can in college.

yeah i forgot to mention that. i applied in chinese, but might call up and change it to arabic. i really dont know. both would be in equal difficulty, obviously because of the new language/dialect, but also because of a new alphabet to learn. chinese has pro's and con's, but so does arabic. what campus did you apply for? i went for the CA one since midd had a waitlist.

i'm kind of treating mmla as a safety, because it is very possible that my semi-finalist position in LEAD, clark scholars, questbridge, or internships dont come through. learning a new language in the bay area would be awesome though. i bet the chinese and arabic cultures are equally predominant there.

I'm applying for the Menlo site. There isn't a Middlebury option available... Do you mean St. Michael's?
