Spanish?

I've completed Spanish 2 during sophomore year and then didn't take spanish as a junior since I took AP Calc BC, AP Physics C, AP Chem, AP Lang, AP Econ and AP Comp. Sci and didn't really have room.. well I suppose I could have made some room but I don't particularly like spanish.

My question is should I take Spanish 4 (I can test out of spanish 3, no worries there) as a senior for college since I'll be looking at competitive schools for engineering. My current senior schedule looks like this: Multi Variable Calc, AP Bio, APUSH, AP Lit, AP Env. Sci, AP Stats, and Differential Eqns and Intro to Quantum Mechanics at a local university. I could drop AP Env. Sci or AP Stats, doesn't really matter which. But please input in your opinion whether should I take Spanish 4 for college admissions or will they'll be okay with the fact that I was more math/science aligned.

Thanks for your time!

I’m sure they’ll be okay that you’re more math/science aligned, but you have SO MANY math/science courses already that I hardly think it’ll hurt you in their eyes to drop Enviro or Stats, but it can only help you to show you went to level 4 in a language (even skipping three).

Keep one thing in mind though-- it’s incredibly difficult to start a language after a year or lapse. Your brain isn’t hardwired to retain that information unless you’re using it on a daily basis. Some things I’d consider: is Spanish 4 an AP at your school? Is the teacher very good? Are you good with languages? Talk to people who’ve taken the class and make sure it’s feasible for you to jump right in after the gap year. I know that would be pretty impossible at my school’s Spanish program due to intensity of speaking/writing focus, but I can’t speak for yours.

Either way, it’s a win/win situation. I think colleges will admire both, but if you can get an A (and a 4/5 on the AP test if it is an AP) I’d go with Spanish.

I would take Spanish 4. Most schools like to see at least three years of foreign language. AP Enviro is usually a useless course. A lot of schools don’t even give credit for it and think it’s an easy class.

Plus, if you skip Spanish 3 and do well in Spanish 4, it would look like you really have a handle on the subject and are studious enough to learn the material on your own.

Spanish 4 isn’t too hard at our school since our spanish program isn’t that challenging and isn’t AP. I am not stellar at languages, but I am pretty decent at them and I know I can jump right into Spanish 4 and be fine as long as I know my Spanish 3. Haha the thing is I want to take it because 2 years wouldn’t look so good but the nerd inside me wants to learn more science even thought it may be AP En. Science for that matter which is really easy. Thanks a lot for your input and your time!

Yeah, I am thinking of doing it now actually. If I test out of Spanish 3 and take Spanish 4, it will count as 4 years, but 3 credits. I didn’t know there was a distinction between years and credits until I asked my counselor which is the reason why I didn’t take it this year because I knew I still had the option to have 4 years of Spanish. Yeah, i hear the same about Env. Science and probably won’t take it now I guess. Thanks for your opinion!

While I want to tell you to be idealistic and to take Spanish for the sake of becoming a well-rounded individual, I know you probably won’t follow my advice.

If you can do well in the class, then take it. Plus, languages are a nice break from math and science classes. I’d say go with Spanish - if you do well, you’ll probably get excused from your foreign language requirement - but it’s up to you.
