sparknotes...

is the sparknotes vocab list of 1000 a good list to study from for the verbal sat

I have an even better list for you. If you can get your hands on an old Barron's SAT I study book (it's for the old SAT, so they don't sell new ones anymore, but see if you can get it from your library or something). It has a vocab list of 3558 words (yes, exactly that many, no I did not count them, one of my tutors did, what a weirdo). It helped me a lot, as sentence completions there after became SOOO much easier (and I got a 100 point boost on my CR score too!)

But I wouldn't spend too much time remembering every single word, because the sentence completions are the only part of the test that you will benefit from remembering vocabulary. If you know about 2500 of those words you're in pretty good shape.

I hope my advice helps!

If you have a year before your next SAT, start on munching on those 3558. As they say, what does not kill you, cripples you.
Better yet, read first discussions on Xiggi's SAT prep advice thread. you may change your mind.
Meanwhile buy cheap used "hot words for the sat i" by Linda Carnevale.
Very brief and concise book. And btw, published by Barron's!
