Does anyone here have experience with OSU’s SPEAC program? It’s a summer program for East Asian languages, I was wondering if anyone knew how selective is to get into and how many applicants they usually get and how many are usually accepted every summer.

Hey, I did the Chinese program this past summer. I really don’t know what the admissions statistics are, but I’d hazard a guess and say that they accept pretty much anyone who applies. It might depend on which language you choose though - I know the Japanese program had a lot of participants (more than 30?). By contrast, the level 2 Chinese program that I did had 5 people total, including me. Hope that helps.

Hey, thanks for answering! It’s good to hear that it’s not very selective.

Now I can only hope that taking two years of Chinese in high school doesn’t make me overqualified for the Level 1 program, since I don’t think I’m good enough for level 2.

Well I wish you the best! Just so you know, I went in for a “placement test” one day in May and the director of the program just had a brief conversation with me in Chinese (like 5 min.) and asked me to read a few lines from a book - nothing terribly difficult. Good luck!

Thanks! I wish you luck with your Chinese studies too! :D

and yeah I don’t think I would be able to impress anyone if I had a 5 minute conversation, my tones are atrocious, I think I’ll just start at level 1.

By the way, are you in the Flagship program?

No problem Fizban. I’d say doing the program is a good choice, no matter what level. I’ve heard that there are so many requirements for the Chinese minor that one might as well do the Chinese major - so you’ll be ahead of the game.

And no, I’m not currently in the Flagship program. I was thinking about it at one point but it seemed to me that you have to spend all your summers in China learning Chinese, which I don’t really want to do (though someone told me I was wrong about this). And I’m currently trying to do a double major in poli sci and econ with a possible minor in math…and junior year study abroad. Don’t know if I can finish all the requirements for everything haha.

Oh wow, looks like you have a lot of requirements, and here I am worrying about finishing a chinese major on time haha.

Yeah the flagship program doesn’t make you spend all your summers in China, but they strongly recommend that you spend a few there because there are a lot of requirements for finishing, especially if you’re going for that dual degree with an M.A.

Anyway, thanks once again for answering, I really didn’t think someone would actually respond because it doesn’t seem like that many people do the program in the first place, heh. Anyway, good luck with finishing your majors on time!
