When I went to an AU info-session, they mentioned the fact that many speakers come to AU and used Bill Clinton as an example. However, I was wondering how often speakers come to American. Who are these speakers and what positions do they have? Are they members of congress, diplomats, media elites, policy analysts? Basically, I want to know on an average day or week, what type of speakers come. Thanks

On an “average day”, none, but occasionally, sure. Don’t give too much credence to a sales pitch.

As an example, here are some speakers who came to Kogod (the business school) last spring:

During next month’s Parents Weekend, Tim Pawlenty and Bill Richardson are appearing in a forum on the election.

I’m sure each AU school brings in gets some prominent speakers relevant to that discipline over the course of the year, but it’s not as if “members of Congress, diplomats, media elites, and policy analysts” are roaming the campus on a daily basis.

My daughter is always going to see speakers. She is in the School of Public Affairs. I will try to get a list.

Here is a link of speakers from AU Student Government Kennedy Political Union.

Also, a lot of people come on to campus to speak directly to classes. For example, World Bank executives, people from all kinds of think tanks, congressional committees, etc…sometimes not the big names, but the people behind them, sharing expertise in classes etc…

This might help give it some perspective: between the opportunities on campus and in D.C. at large, there will be more speakers and opportunities to meet great people than you will have time for.
