How much should I be getting paid for tutoring (French)? I offered to tutor just for community service, but the boy's mother insists that she pay me. She wants me to name a price, though.... What's reasonable? (We meet once a week for about an hour and a half)

Well dude if its for community service insist on not getting paid.

Otherwise, tutors can get anywhere from $10-30+/hour, depending on what type of neighborhood you live in (Richer neighborhoods=more generous parents)

Well, I'm not counting it as community service... I wouldn't do that.
She literally would NOT let me go unpaid, though!!!

The family is pretty rich, I think (the 8th grader has a Blackberry, and the mom drives a BMW. Yeah. One of those families.) ... but, I would feel awkward asking for too much. What's an average amount?

About $20 or so. If you have to drive there and it's kinda far ask for a little more for gas like $25.

Give her a range, maybe 10-20, depending on what level french you are dealing with. I've found that they end up paying more anyway to prove that they can.

Once I shovelled snow for a neighbor for less than half an hour and said that 5 would be fine and got 30.

I earned $15/hour tutoring a sophomore in pre-IB chemistry. We met in the library at school, so gas money wasn't an issue.

i would suggest 20-25

Around 20, 25 if you're dealing with advanced french.

I get paid 15 for pre-algebra :)

Well, the guy who tutors my cousin (only with college degree-not in subject he's teaching my cousin) gets $60/hr which is pretty steep. If you have to drive there, tell them that, and say, It's like $15 for the lesson and $5-10 for gas money (depending on how far). Also, check around in your area for babysitting prices and up it by a few dollars an hour.

I get $15-20 per hour, but I think $25 is a fair price.

Ask for $40 per hour. If she says thats too much, tell her to pay you what she feels comfortable with. Don't feel akward. If she is willing to pay you a lot of money, let her.
