speaking of move in

Ok... i seem to have completely lost an capacity of a memory about how move-in day works.

1) how early can we get there?
2) are we supposed to go to the dorm first... or do we have to go pick up a key or something elsewhere first?
3) If the dorm...I would have to drop my stuff then park right?
4) if not the dorm first, where am I supposed to go?

After move-in.... what's next?

there was a thread about this which answered all your questions above, maybe you should check the posts of few days earlier.

you should have received a letter telling you what time and what you should do - i did.

1) I went the day before and they let me move in. Worth a try if you're close by.
2) You get the key at the dorm.
3) Doesn't matter, whatever order you would prefer.

what time do the dorms officially open for move in? i havent recieved anything about move in day at all

I didn't get anything about move-in either. huh. well thanks a lot!

Just go straight to your dorm. If you are in a car, pull up to the curb of your dorm. You need to quickly unpack and then have someone stand by all your stuff (in a line to your dorm) while another (parent probably) parks the car. There are two lines (so my mentor has told me). One is a "stuff" line (assuming your stuff you have to take up to your dorm) and the other is a "sign-in" line, where I'm assuming you check in and get your key and all the other literature/whatever you need. Once you've checked in, it's just about taking your stuff up to the dorm. I've heard that this process (including unloading in your dorm) takes anywhere from 1.5 - 3 hours. It may take longer than that (especially if, like me, you are bringing EVERYTHING with you and not buying anything in NY) , but 3 is the most I've heard from anyone thus far.

This is all pretty much what I've heard from my mentor (now a sophomore at NYU), so if I got anything wrong, upperclassmen feel free to correct me.

what time do the dorms actually open though? does anyone know

Mine (Rubin) opens 9am...you're supposed to be split up though. First half of the alphabet in the morning, second in the afternoon. I've heard that it doesn't really matter though...we are just getting there when we get there, probably about 11am or noon.

All this information came in the housing assignment envelope. It's the white brochure.

By last name, check-in time is:
A-L 9:00 AM-1:00 PM
M-Z 1:00 PM-5:00 PM

Though just show up when you can show up. The last name system isn't enforced, from what I hear.

"To check-in proceed to your assigned residence hall. There will be staff and students available to direct you through the process."

Is it necessary to use hand trucks/hand carts to transport stuff? It'd be convenient having one but I don't want to buy one and use it once.

I have plans that day, so can I check in as late as.. 9pm?

Hmm, if I get there earlier (like around 7-8ish) will I be allowed to check in? Or do they really officially open at 9?

JLin: I don't think you can check in at 9... you should get there by 5, just to be safe. The line will have subsided GREATLY by then anyway (it's at its worst in the morning-noon hours). plus, you'll probably have a mandatory hall meeting at 8-9ish like we did last year.

compgurl: last year i arrived at the dorm (rubin) just after 7am since I had a red-eye flight, and I don't remember exactly when they let us in, but a line had already begun forming by the time I got there. I don't remember waiting long; definitely less than an hour. Impatient parents and students kept asking when they would open, and so once they were able to set everything up, they started letting people in. Thankfully, this meant I didn't have to wait in super long lines in the midday heat...I just had to wait for them to get ready in the cool morning air. So definitely come early if you can!

JLin, no you cannot get checked in at 9 p.m. As nirvana has said, you should be there by 5 latest. And yes, you will have a mandatory floor meeting that night with your R.A. and floormates. You're going to have to change your plans.

youkosiren, you said you moved in a day early? Where did you go, directly to your dorm & they let you in? I'm just wondering because I don't live far away & it would be great if I could do that.

Could you go like a week early?

no (10char)

How many people do you think I should bring tomorrow to help me move in? (I live an hour away, so it's not a big deal for me)

Im going by myself - dont know if that helps you any though.
