Specfic reoccuring math question (remainders)

There is always one question in the math sections that deal with remainders and finding something in the equation.

I can solve it logically, but I would like a more definite way of solving through a step by step equation.

For example:

"If x is an integer and 3 is the remainder when 2x + 7 is divided by 5, then x could be.."

A) 2
B) 3
C) 4
D) 5
E) 6

Its B. Just plug and play!

lol I know its B. But there is a sure way of solving this. I don't want to just plug in numbers if I can help it.

Since when was plug and play a bad method? I find it an incredibly efficient time-saver.
