Special Case For UCLA and UCSD. What are my chances?

Hello Guys,

I am new to this forum and just wanted all your opinion and thoughts about my chances of getting into UCLA or UCSD. I am a Jewish male from Boca Raton, FL. Also, tell me my chances for the other colleges I mention towards the bottom.

First, let me fill in as to why I am a special case. We'll unfortunately, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma one week prior to the beginning of junior year, which meant I had to drop my 3 APs( AP Human Geography, AP European History, AP Literature). From August 2005-February 2006, I was on chemotherapy and had to attend school via telephone which only offered regular courses. Secondly, I had no time to prepare for my collegeboards so my scores definitely do not reflect my IQ. During middle school, I was enrolled in the Gifted Program at my middle and achieved a 3.75 unweighted GPA. My stats are below, but my question for you is, what do you think my chances are for UCLA and UCSD with my type of conditions. I have been in remission for one year, :)..knock on wood. But, I was rushed in the SAT subject and SAT Reasoning Test process while students got months and months of study, I was stuck in a bed with an IV hooked up to my arm pumping strong chemicals into my body. Also, my attendance record for this year is sort of on the high side, but I still achieved a 4.8 weighted GPA and 3.8 unweighted GPA for the 1st semester of senior year.

Stats:
GPA UW(9th-11th):3.685
GPA W(9th-11th): 3.954
Rank: 18th Percentile
GPA UW(10th-11th;For UCLA and UCSD): 3.85
GPA W(10th-11th):4.13
SAT: C/R:580 MATH:630; :(

Let me fill in about Raise The Cure. Raise the Cure is a club that I started this year. Our goal is to help raise money through fundraisers and send that money to Curesearch to help fund in the research for cures of childhood ailments. As we speak, I am in the process of getting together a golf tournament and am trying to get some local celebrities to help host it. I plan on converting this small club into an organization within the next couple of years.

I am also applying to the following schools:

-University of Florida, Gainesville
-University of Maryland, College Park
-University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
-University of Virginia, Charlottesville
-University of Washington,Seattle
-University of Conn., Storrs
-University of Mass., Amherst(sister is alumni)

Been Accepted:
-Florida State University, Tallahassee(backup)
-University of Central Florida, Orlando(backup)

Please guys be real with me, I can handle the truth.

Thanks Again!

im really not sure what any1 is going to do with u, and u should probably talk to a real admissions counselor bc i doubt any1 will even know on this board. good luck whatever happens bc ur condition is obviously badly timed

UCLA is possible; UCSD is likely.

For out of state, and even in state, your sat's are low for UCSD and UCLA. In state SAT averages for admits is around 1940 for UCSD and 2010 for UCLA. In state GPA averages for admits is around a 4.04 for UCSD, and a 4.12 for UCLA. Out of state averages for admits will be significantly higher than these numbers for both schools. Im not sure why the poster above stated that you were likely in for UCSD and have a good shot at UCLA. Its gonna be tough for you to gain admissions to either school, partially because you are applying out of state, which makes admissions to UC's, especially top ones such as UCSD and UCLA quite difficult. Also your class rank is around the top 18th, which you stated. For UCLA, 97% of the incoming class is in the top 10% of their high school class. And for UCSD the percentage is even higher, as 99% of the incoming class is in the top 10% of their high school class. As an out of state applicant, I would imagine you would likely have to be in the top 10% of your class for admission, especially out of state. For UCSD, in state you would be around a match-slight reach. However, out of state, you are a slight reach to reach. For UCLA you would be a slight reach in state, but are a reach out of state. However, you do have special circumstances, and hopefully the admissions officers will read your essays and consider your special circumstances, which could help your odds. However, i would deffiantly not agree with the above poster that you are likely to UCSD and have a good shot at UCLA. His odds do not seem realistic according to admissions numbers, especially out of state. Sorry about everything that happened to you, and best of luck. Dont be discouraged, as no one on this board, myself included, knows how the admissions committee will evaluate your application do to your special circumstances. As a UCSD alumni and UCLA graduate student, I can tell you first hand that both schools are excellent institutions and solid choices for your education, however they are both quite large. Because you are out of state, and difficulty for admission is very tough, and tuition is very high, you could likely get into a good private school with smaller classes for a similar amount of money. That being said, you deffiantly have a shot at getting into one of these schools (UCSD, UCLA), especially with your circumstances. However, calling your odds around 50% or even better seems a but unrealistic. Just make sure to apply to plenty of match and safety schools as well. Best of luck!

UCSD: Slight Reach (oos)

UCLA: Reach (oos)

Man, you had those diseases but you still have a better GPA than I do =/

lol im really sorry to be redundant, but i have no idea how the adcoms would handle your situation...

What about the other ones?

I'm really a top student and I don't think it's fair how a disease that was out of my control is limiting my school choices.

BruinsJEW:

UCLA: Reach (out of state)
UCSD: Slight Reach (out of state)

is slight reach a 60 percent chance
and reach like a 40 percent chance?

Yeah.

I don't know. Everyone on this forum is either being real honest or really does not know how a college is going to react to a scenario like this. I don't think it's fair for a college to penalize me, because it's not like I was not enrolled in the upper level courses. I was, and I had to drop them, because it's hard enough doing schoolwork on chemotherapy, and APs aren't offered via internet or telephone.

It's not my fault, .

And SAT's, only one month of preparation does not leave much time for improving. And junior year, I also had big plans for extracurriculars such as trying out for JV Lacrosse team and starring in some of the theatrical productions at my school.

I would think since i had an illness, the colleges would put me on a special scale and not just put me on the graph of a regular applicant.

People really need don't know how hard it is to concentrate on your studies and how hard it is to battle cancer at this stage in ones life.

Whatever. Thanks for the honesty.

i think ur condition could help at most schools
but i dont know about ucla and ucsd cause they are super strict on OOS

OOS have to be above the average acceptant from CA

but
maybe u have a chance...
Just maybe

I can't say for sure since ur an outta stater but you are a shoo in for UW by my scale :)
Maybe you should work a little on your scores? Just a little suggestion...
I'm sure you will do just fine. Good lUck :)

I got into UMASS today.

woo hoo...one down...:)

one down for ya. good job. keep us posted on how everything goes. congrats again.

I think you should apply to other schools as well to increase chances and the more you apply to the better ur chances are for being accepted to a great school. You seem like a really smart kid to me with a strong passion make that come accross on your application and you will be in at atleast one place you want to go to. Good luck hope you do really well for college!

I got into UWASH today, LOL.

I think at least. People say if your status is blank and then your unofficial transcript loads then your in, so I'm positive I've been accepted. How hard is Uwash as in relation to UCSD?

Two colleges this week...UMASS AND UWASH(I THINK)

If you apply to UCSD oos and U of Washington oos UCSD should be somewhat more difficult to gain admissions too. UCSD and UCLA are very difficult out of state. I love U of Washington however. Its campus is awesome (very large but awesome) and Seattle is one of my favorite cities (probably my second favorite behind San Diego). Both are beautiful coastal cities, obviously San Diego has the better weather, but both have awesome night scenes and such. Congrats on U of Washington. Its truly a wonderful school! Keep us posted on UCSD and UCLA! Best of luck!

I am going to say that you are a safety at SD and a match at UCLA.

^^^people are posting stats about something they obviously know nothing about. The posters GPA is approx average for in state acceptances for UCLA and UCSD. His SAT's are also lower than the in state average into UCSD and UCLA. So how on earth when the poster is applying to these UC's out of state, which is much more difficult to gain admission into, would UCSD be a safety and UCLA a match when in state UCSD would be a match-slight reach and UCLA a slight reach-reach. Dont give bogus chances to the poster on things you know nothing about. That is not fair to him. Those are odds you gave, anarkii, are so far off its not even funny. The illness stated in the letter will deffiantly help the posters odds, but deff not enough to call these schools matches oos let alone safeties. That is hillarious. Just look at the in average admits for these two schools. 4.04 GPA, 1940 SAT at UCSD. 4.12 GPA, 2010 SAT at UCLA. 99% of freshmen in the top 10% of high school class at UCSD, and 97% of high school class in top 10% of UCLA. And remember, most of these admits were in state (over 95%), oos is significantly more difficult to gain admissions too. Which meens applying oos you would need even better stats than the ones listed above to likely get admission to these schools. I hate when people post bogus chances when they obviosuly know nothing about the schools or their admissions averages. Guessing on something you know nothing about is not exactly helpfull to the poster.

UCSD: <a href="http://universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucsd.html%5B/url%5D">http://universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucsd.html</a></p>

UCLA: <a href="http://universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucla.html%5B/url%5D">http://universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucla.html</a></p>

These are almost all in state averages. OOS would be significantly harder with much higher averages.

UCSD: Slight Reach (oos)
UCLA: Reach (oos)

Hi,
I just wanted to tell you that my ex got into UCLA. He was out of state, GPA of 4.2 weighted 3.7 unwieghted, SAT of 1650. Not an amzing student but he was very involved and had alot of unique interests. I really think if you have something unique about you, UCLA will consider. They look for diversity. I have talked to several people who go there and they are all completely different. I have talked to kids who were ranked first in their class and i have talked to kids who had a GPA of 3-3.3 and very little extra curricular activites and low SAT scores and they were still admitted. I talked to a boy who took state at karate championship and they put a star next to that on his application yet his grades were very mediocre. UCLA looks for diversity and i think you have a chance.
good luck

a 3.0 and low SAT scores and got admitted to UCLA out of high school? haha umm that doesnt sound very realistic. maybe randomly one person. but your saying you know kids with these type of stats admitted, as in much more than one person. that is ridiculous. 97% in the top 10% of their high school class, 100% in the top 25% of their high school class. that wouldnt leave much room for many 3.0's GPA's and low SAT's would it.
