SO, what are my chance? I know NYU is a reach, but , in your opinion, what are my odds? Also, does NYU require recommendations from college freshmen (I will have about 32 credits by the time I apply)?

BUM BUMP anyone?

Did you apply to NYU-Stern as a high school senior? How was your high school transcript. Hard to give full weight to one semester of college alone.

I pretty much described my transcript above. No, I didn't apply. Next semester, I will be taking a couple of honors classes and hope to raise my gpa to a 3.8. That is nothing important that I left out, really.

If you did't apply as a high school senior, why change now? Is PSU that bad? I see you are also looking at CMU. Both are good schools. Good Luck.

If you have more than 32 credits, NYU will put less emphasis on your high school report and more on your college performance. I think transfering to NYU is more difficult than applying your senior year due to the limited spots. Nonetheless, I do think you have a decent shot.. good luck!

I see that you've never taken SAT II's before you graduated high school, which is a requirement now... just try to get 32 credits before you transfer.

Bad or not, I actually know many PSU students who are desperately trying to transfer to NYU.

I am not happy at PSU because I just don't fit in with the student body--but that isn't really important. I want to transfer to NYU because I live in NYC and believe NYU would be a perfect match for me. I didn't apply in the first place because I would probably be rejected, but now I realize how constructive it would be going to a great school without having to dorm in.

Does that mean I will have to take the SAT II before I apply?

As of now, I don't have any recommendations, but I will be taking two honors courses next semester and hopefully get to know the professors well enough to have them write good recs by spring break.

I'm not too sure about this, but I do believe that you are not allowed to take SAT's once you graduate from high school. Even if Collegeboard lets you sign up to take them, I don't think NYU will count that at all because SAT's and GPA are supposed to reflect what kind of a student you were in high school.

Just get above 32 credits and then transfer.. after 32 credits, NYU won't put much emphasis on your high school record at all.

Yeah, the 8 people I know who want to transfer from PSU to NYU all hate PSU's isolated location... the social life is pretty sheltered too if you grew up in NYC.

it would be unfair to take SAT's after high school because your score would compare you with other high school kids.

We will know the answer somewhere in feb of next year ; ). Stressed out, do you thin your friends will have a chance?

Would you say I have a decent chance?

My friend has a GPA of 3.5... next spring, she's aiming for a GPA of 3.7.. I wouldn't recommend transfering unless you have at least a 3.5.

In your case, if you can bring your 3.63 up to a 3.7 or 3.8, I'd say that you're already 50% in gauranteed. Of course, I'm not too familiar with this whole transfering process.. make sure you emphasize a lot on your essays and teacher's recommendations because PSU is still not quite in the same league as NYU.

I transfered from PSU to NYU last year... 3.4 GPA into Psychology Program 32 credits all transfered and i was able to nab a few scholarships... i've met 7 kids who transfered from PSU while at NYU. It's a huge change too. but good luck

That is great to hear, luchycharms. so, you stayed at psu for a year then transferred? How were you able to get recommendations--most intro psych courses at PSU are huge??

Also, could you briefly describe your SATs and HS stats?

Annnd most importantly, when did you apply (towards which month?). It seems that NYU was sort of a reach fo you, I am guessing your essay question and ECs must have been impressive.

Yep i did my freshman year at PSU and Soph at NYU, im a junior now... I justed asked my english 15 prof and my art history... my intro to psych teacher wouldn't write it because there were like 600 kids in the class... but i did well at PSU i think... im just happy everything worked out well..

I went to an urban high school in philly, most kids who actually went to school went to PSU or Temple...it was a shock going to college and seeing the type of schools kids actually came from
SAT 1210 590 V 620 M

3.8 GPA
I was involved in alot in high school from NHS president to Big Brother/Big Sister and i had a job

I didn't get into any school i applied to as a senior except PSU.. i was waitlisted and later rejected at BU BC and Lehigh and rejected at Penn and deferred and Rejected from Brown....

I heard from NYU in April though when I was at PSU tho. it was a good choice i think but NYU is alot more competitive then PSU but I love it there now..

i applied in feb of 06... they called me in march and wanted to know my spring mid terms grades which were all A's....

as a transfer i got into Boston University, Lehigh, Drexel, American, and NYU. I was waitlisted at BC, and rejected from Penn and brown again...

Thanks for the info. I would think that the standards for transfer students have gone up since you applied, but your HS record was indeed very impressive. I am from NYC and feel completely out of place at PSU. Hopefully, I will be able to get a good enough rec next year to have a fair shot.

Good luck in your senior year.

One more question, why would you ask the psych prof for a rec in the first place? Did you expect him just to talk about your grades and that is it?
