Specialized engineering

I’ve been involved in both computer science and mechanical engineering through classes at my school and jobs that i’ve had. I’m having a hard time choosing definitely between the two, and I’m interested in an up and coming field of engineering called Automation engineering. The field is based around automating various tasks both physical and computational. I was wondering as most college won’t offer this major am i better off just combining the two and creating my own type of thing or just majoring in something more conventional.

I don’t know if you are aware of this, but automation is not new. It has been around for decades. That said, “automation engineering” is not a thing and I would be skeptical of a school selling it as such. Get a degree in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering or computer science. Those are the fields that go into automation. Pick the one that best aligns with your interests and the sort of subsystems you think you might want to help design and build in a future career.

Though I don’t need to, as he already summed it up, I’m simply going to echo @boneh3ad 's statement. Automation is not some rare, specialized thing. Automation, controls, etc. are well-established aspects of traditional engineering and science disciplines, and can be approached from a background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and even chemical engineering.

" I’m interested in an up and coming field of engineering called Automation engineering." - If you give us some background on your reasoning (or links to related info that appealed to you) we can probably offer further suggestions.
