Hi! I go to a specialized high school (more rigorous than regular public schools, requires a test to get in) and was wondering how much/if at all my grades are inflated on college applications. So let’s say I have a B+ in history (“regular” history in our school because there’s no such thing as “honors history”), does that get inflated to an A- to account for the difference between my school and a regular public school?
It is my understanding that the grades will not be “inflated”. However, your college counselor will submit your school profile along with your transcript and their recommendation to the college. Most “prestigious” high school will be well known to many college admissions officers, in terms of its rigor and will take that into consideration when reviewing your application and seeing your grades. Some elite private schools will receive special treatment, since they are know for very rigorous curriculum, from the admin committee, which is why 30 to 40% of the graduating seniors are accepting into the Ivys and other elite colleges.
I see, thank you!
If you’re writing from Stuy, Bronx Sci, Brooklyn Tech etc. your guidance office keeps stats on what schools accepted students and with what stats. They used to post these in a spreadsheet online, but I suspect now those stats are available through Naviance. In some schools Naviance is made available during the junior year. Some schools allow the students to get access in the fall semester and open it to the parents spring semester, in order to encourage the students to take the lead in their application process.
The upshot here is ask your Guidance office when you can get access to what stats from your school are accepted at which colleges.
Best of luck
Awesome, yeah I think I’ll go to my guidance counselor after winter break
