Specific Engineering Questions

Does anyone know what the second year retention rate is at UVA for engineering students is?

Does anyone know how many BME students were accepted this year (I think it was around 100 or so last year) and how many were denied?

What type of internship/COOP experiences have you had as a UVA engineering student? Are they tough to get?

Thanks.

1) Have no clue, I’d expect it to be over 80% though
2) It was around 80. Hardly anyone with decent grades gets rejected, not as many apply as you would think
3) there’s a huge variety available, you just have to make an effort to line one up. The career center sends out weekly, if not daily, emails about job/internship offers. Most companies have opportunities online too. Not to mention research opportunities at UVa or other schools. I had an internship every year and it did take some work in the beginning, but by the summer after third year, it was easy to get one. All the experience made finding a job for post-grad easier too

When announcing major decisions last year, Dean Berger sent this email out (to current second-year students).

“You might be interested in some statistics about this year’s process. 90% of SEAS student have been offered admission to their first choice of major, and another 7.9% were offered admission to their second choice. The remaining 2.1% of SEAS students have been offered admission to either their third or fourth choice major. The most competitive major was once again Biomedical Engineering, which had an acceptance rate of roughly 63%. All other majors had acceptance rates greater than 90%, with some majors accepting 100% of students who applied. Less than 10 SEAS students with cumulative GPA above 3.0 failed to gain entry into their first choice major, and all of those students applied to Biomedical Engineering.”

So basically if you have a decent GPA (and I believe the average for SEAS is around 3.2, but don’t quote me on that). He also said elsewhere in the email that 8% of students left to join the college, so that’s a 92% retention rate.

As a second-year student, I had a great internship last summer (between first and second year) very related to my major, so that hasn’t been a problem at all.

Thanks for the info Rodman. It was what I was looking for @my original question.

Is it possible to transfer to BME in freshman, from other department of engineering in UVa? How hard?

I believe your question is answered by Rodman. 63% of those applying for BME as freshman were accepted. If BME accepted 63% of those who applied and they take roughly 90 students you’re looking at about 143 engineers applied for BME and 90 were accepted.

Lighthouse, applicants apply directly to the Engineering school at UVa, and then apply to their majors at the end of their freshman year. I hope that answers your question.

What is the most popular engineering program besides BME?

Probably SystemsE, then Mech/AeroE
