Specific Residence Hall and Move-In Questions

Anyone else who has specific questions about dorm life can ask questions in here. Don't ask "Which dorm is better?" or "What should I bring?" because there already are threads about that. I'm thinking about specific questions about moving into your dorm at UNC, and such.

Here are my questions:

-After move in, is there a certain place most people keep their empty luggage? Or do they just shove it under the bed?

-Does the kitchen stay open 24/7? Should I bring pans/pots/no-stick-spray, or are there plenty of supplies? What kind of supplies are stocked in the kitchen anyway? I live near a kitchen on my floor, so I shouldn't need a microwave in my room, right? And should I bring a wafflemaker? :)

-Are the floors bare or do any have carpet? (I will live in Koury) I think I heard someone say we can rent a rolled up carpet through UNC and put it on the floor. Is that true? If so, please provide a link or tell me how much it is.

-Do we need to bring a vacuum, or can we borrow those?

-Do we need to buy a pole or mount for putting up curtains, or is there already something in the room to put the curtains on?

-A sheet about what to bring says to bring "Magic Mounts" for posters. Do those work on bulletin boards and whiteboards too? If not, how do we put those up?

-Is there a nearby Walmart? If I still need to buy things when I move in, I want to buy them cheaply. Where do roommates normally go to shop for their dorms?

Thanks! I greatly appreciate any answers, and feel free to ask your own questions on this thread!

I answered my own question about the carpet. Check out the site:

https://www.rhcarpets.com/nch/carpetdetail.aspx?SKU=BEI&group=1

Prices vary from $65 to $155 depending on the size of the carpet. But is it worth it…?

I heard that the 4th floor ceilings are sloped in Connor. Can you bunk and/or loft the beds in those rooms, or does the ceiling prevent this?

Are all the rooms on 4th floor Connor for doubles, or are any of them triples? From the exterior pictures, it looks like Connor is similar to Joyner, so I looked up Joyner’s floorplans. The floorplan for Joyner’s 4th floor shows a big range of sizes (11x24 vs 11x16). Unfortunately, the only floorplan posted for Connor is for 1st floor. Is the comparison to Joyner a good one, or am I wasting my time with it?

Thanks for starting this thread. It will be very useful, if someone ‘in the know’ latches on and gives some good answers!

just to add another specific dorm related question, HJ doesn’t have any rooms on the ground floor, right? so if I have a room numbered 0905 (completely hypothetical, of course), I’m on the 9th floor?

Most people just keep their empty luggage under their beds, or something like that.

The kitchens are open 24/7 as far as I know. Most dorms have some cookware, but if you think you will cook a lot, it is better to have your own because you have to check out the pots and things through dorm enhancements, which are included in your fees. As far as supplies go, pretty much get your own. The microwave deal is up to you. I lived 20 feet away from the kitchen, but I brought my own microwave.

-Are the floors bare or do any have carpet? (I will live in Koury) I think I heard someone say we can rent a rolled up carpet through UNC and put it on the floor. Is that true? If so, please provide a link or tell me how much it is.

You can borrow vacuums.

You do need a mount for curtains if you want that, if I remember correctly. I’m a guy, so a girl might be better to get an answer from.

I’m pretty sure there magic mounts work for those.

There are two Targets near about 15 minutes off campus. Also, UNC sets up a shuttle to go to Southpoint, where one of the Targets is, one day during the first few days to give you a chance to get anything you may need.

Grizzmom,

I stayed on the fourth floor of Connor during my CTOPS last summer, and the way the room was set up, you might be able to loft the beds depending on your room. I’m pretty sure some of the rooms are triples too though.

I’m pretty sure (i think i read it on some website) that there is a Walmart near UNC. and to add a question of my own: when dorms are closed for major holidays like winter break or thanksgiving, fall break etc. do we have to empty the rooms as well, as in take our stuff with us??? or can we just take what we need and leave the rest in our room?

Nope. Just take what you need for breaks. You don’t have to completely clear everything out of your dorm until move-out day at the end of the year.

Thanks, packerfan!
