Hi, I am applying to college in the fall, and since I am applying to several private schools (with a hefty price tag) I need to apply for as many scholarships as possible. I have already applied to every easy scholarship as possible, as well as Courage to Grow and Bryan Cameron EF. I need help finding scholarships specific to me though, so if you could help me out, I’d really appreciate it! I’ll leave a list down below!
First Generation Student
Female
Human Rights advocate/ major
NHS member
community service (over 200 hours)
volunteering for the elderly/ volunteering for environment
eligible for a pell grant (I don’t know of any specific things for this but if you find something let me know!)
merit (4.0 weighted/ 3.7 unweighted)
impacted by divorce
impacted by substance abuse/ parent is a substance abuser (I would REALLY appreciate it if anyone found a scholarship for this)
Parent has been/is incarcerated
mental illness (severe anxiety/ depression)
The best scholarships are from the colleges themselves so look at those now. Some schools have separate deadlines for scholarships usually in the fall. Sometimes there are additional essays, sometimes everyone is considered, sometimes you just check a box to expesss interest.
Have you applied to Questbridge for help
with the application process?
If you are eligible for the Pell Grant you should look at the Gates Scholarship.
IF you have overcome significant obstacles in life, you should look at Horatio Alger.
Otherwise, read on the Scholarships forum and you will find many mentioned.
Part of the value to the student of scholarships is developing the skill to search, index and apply for them on time.
We also discovered that the merit aid from individual colleges far outpaced any scholarship money my daughter won, so look into that as well.
There is a lot of knowledge here on CC, but not a lot of hand outs. We expect people to help us help them When you say “Would appreciate if anyone found a scholarship for this” my reaction is “No, you go find it.” (said in a warm tone)
Let us know your home state, major, GPA, SAT scores etc. and people here will point out schools which may be a good deal with merit aid.
Good luck to you in your search, by starting early you are raising your chances of getting an affordable college education!
If you are a National Honor Society applicant with a 3.7 UW, and 4.0 WGPA, and with a compelling story, you have a reasonable shot at acceptance at one or more of the full-needs met schools. What is your class rank? Are you taking challenging courses that might be considered “most rigorous”
What does your high school guidance counselor suggest - where do kids from your high school with similar grades/scores as you find themselves accepted?
My school does not rank, and I am taking college level courses both in high school and at actual colleges for summer sessions. As for what my guidance counselor suggests, she isn’t much help. She is just telling me to apply to colleges I want to and see if I get in regardless of financial aid. I have applied for numerous scholarships, and I am waiting to get my act scores back to see where I stand for merit in terms of scores. My sat was pretty low- a 1230, 700 in reading/ writing and a 530 in math. I am applying to Barnard (I have another thread on that), but I don’t know if I’m going to get in. I am from New York. What schools do you suggest I look at for aid?
