Specific tips for UIUC freshman

What are some things freshman should keep in mind as we enter this fall? Specifically for UIUC, let's try to avoid the generic pieces of advice...unless they are really emphasized here.

UIUC is known for being a party school, so don't go crazy with your newfound freedom and party all the time, and be responsible if you do. Every fall, a few freshmen end up in the hospital because they binge drink much more than they can handle. I haven't heard of any UIUC freshmen dying from this, but it certainly has happened at other schools.

Also, make sure you attend all your classes for at least the first semester. If the class is really so easy that you're sure you can do without the lectures, then go ahead and skip, but don't just sleep in because there's no one to make sure you go to class. Your grades will suffer as a result.

I think the biggest adjustments your first semester are time management and handling your freedom responsibly.

is UIUC one of those schools where u could find a party pretty much every day of the week?

^Yeah I was wondering about that too.

And what happened during Unofficial this year? I heard there was a death or something, but I'm not sure how it was related to Unofficial. I also read that there will be different measures taken next year, but all the info was really vague.

Around the beginning of the year, it's possible to find a party practically every day of the week, but most of the large parties are hosted by frats, sororities, or clubs. In general though, there aren't too many large parties during the week once students have settled into their classes. If you're not a part of the greek system, then it's much more common to go to bars or clubs. When people who like to party don't have to worry about school, (around the beginning and end of each semester), they head out to the bars pretty frequently.

no i didnt hear of any deaths or anything remotely close to that but people here are basically trying to ban the holiday just coz they are fed up with large amounts of binge drinking that happens on that day.

yeah, an alum died bc she fell off a motorcycle and didnt have a helmet on. something like that. i dont remember if alch was involved- i think it was. theyre trying to crack down on unofficial now...even this year the bars opened at 11 instead of 8.
