I do not see what all the fuss is about. If you don't think you are going to make it under the top 10% then you either go CAPs or head up to OU as SWTCAT mentioned. I think you will probably end up in fine shape either way.

I mean if it is really that important everyone would just want to go to Rice anyway.

flatxca, I'm not sure about if it is easier to transfer as a junior. I imagine it would be contingent upon which major you are transferring into and the room at that level.

The kids I know who've done the transfer thing used AP credit and usually one semester at ACC or St. Eds to have 30 hours, then transferred into Liberal Arts in the spring. Then after a semester at UT (or longer) they transferred into the major they want (provided their grades are good).

Apparently UT sent emails or letters to HS counselors saying that they have accepted over 12,000 people by law (and im sure a few hundred are just from wealthy legacies and not in top ten--i know several from my school). 12000 for ~7,000 spots. So from what I hear, if you haven't been accepted by now bc you aren't in top ten, then don't expect to get in.

I can't remember but I think I heard that those 7k spots are already filled or very close to it.

Thats what my counselor received from UT.. my facts could be off but things aren't looking good.

I read this on another post - maybe this is part of the email

[quote]
Here is an excerpt
from an email received from UT last evening explaining the decision
to not offer summer admission, "Due to the number of top 10%
admits we have in the upcoming fall, plus admits to special majors
(i.e. Fine Arts), UT Austin will not have any remaining spaces to
admit a Summer Freshman Class for 2009. Essentially, we are facing a
situation where all of our available summer freshman class spaces
have already been allocated to the fall semester and we have run out
of space for additional students."

Elrod, some people want to go to UT, some people have wanted to go there their entire lives, so that is why there is a fuss.

And, most people who are dying to go to UT are not the type to want to go to Rice (see this thread in particular: What are the chicks like at Rice?)

It's a completely different college experience!

Exactly AG54! There are kids that have always wanted to go to UT because thier grandparents and parents went there..and Rice is a totally different kind of experience..

I'm SCARRRRRRRRRREEEEED. There is definitely NO HOPE for me...
I went to UT's website and checked the top10% report out...for 2008
around 5000 enrolled in the freshman class were top 10% the other 2k were nontop10

I'd be safe if I said this year there would be around 1k spots for non-top10ers.

FML :(
In school we were told that if you got into the top 10% you were guaranteed admission - but they didn't tell us if we weren't in the top 10% WE HAVE NO CHANCE!!! :'(

I really feel like I am just waiting for my rejection right now... =-/

wow im an idiot...if i knew it would be this competitive i would have put CAS and Natural Sciences as my major
instead i put Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering :/

According to the 2008 Top 10% report, approximately 9000 applicants last year were top 10%. 5114 of them enrolled.
Add 1000 top 10% applicants from this year's pool from
http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/docs/no.sfc.2009.pdf
And you get approximately 10,000 top 10% auto admits to UT this year. :(
I'd say 6000 of them enroll, leaving 1200 spaces for non top 10%, International, & OOS combined. Pretty ridiculous.

I know this has been said many times but people at A&M ARE nicer. I went on a day trip there and during a scavenger hunt on campus I got separated from my group (I saw some one that graduated my school and said Hi and when I turned around I couldn't find my group) and the first person I walked up to and asked where I should go for information walked with me to the nearest building to see if they knew where my group was, and when they didn't know, she walked me around campus for 30 minutes until I got to where I should be.

There's even a difference in their admission recruiter people that come to my school. TAMU's was soooo nice and helpful. I ended up seeing her several times and she was so friendly. The one from UT..whom I only "met" once... was cold and grumpy. People from UT just seem snobby and rude.

Plus there are too many hobos at UTs doorsteps.
I hear orientals get mugged a lot.

And the emphasis at UT is on their graduate students. And undergraduate classes are more likely to be taught by grad students or teachers with heavy accents.

Oh and A&M has better connections in the job market.

Honestly I wanted to go to UT (my brother's a sophomore in engineering there) and if I had been accepted...it would have been very hard for me to decline since I'm so easily influenced by those rankings. But I really don't think I will be accepted now.. (even though I should have!!) so I'm kind of glad the choice was made for me and I'll go to A&M.

Really though, you need to just visit both campuses and see which one feels better. Don't decide just by what is said on here.

Oh and A&M gives more fin-aid
They have a new 60K and under thing... I forgot the details but check it out if your family makes less than 60k
