Most schools that I want to apply to require recommendations from 2 academic teachers. One of the teachers I asked to write my recommendation was my Speech Communication teacher. But do colleges consider Speech Communication an academic subject, or do they view the same as they view non-academic classes such as Gym?

In Speech, we get homework, we have to research topics, and we have to write out our own speeches. It requires alot of work just like the core classes- but I don't know if colleges see it that way.

So do you guys think that I will be fine having my Speech Communication teacher write me an academic recommendation?

Fine..........................

Call your potential schools and ask

Problem Solved!

I've been wondering the same thing. In son's case, the two teacher who will have known him best by graduation are his French and Music teachers. Their classes will account for 9 of his 33 credits.

Are French and Music academic enough for recommendations? They're not electives; they're graduation requirements in Maryland and foreign lang is even a college app requirement.

I'm almost 100% certain that foreign language will count for an academic recommendation.

As for speech communication and music, I think they should. However, some schools may want more of a hard science or english type recommendation. Just check with the prospective schools to be 100% sure.

I took a public speaking couse and it was considered an English class. That's fairly similar.
