Speech Language Pathology

Anyone else considering pursuing a masters in this field? I'm currently an English major, French minor at my current university. Unfortunately, they don't offer a program of study in Speech Language Pathology where I attend. And it is too late for me to transfer to another school since I will be a junior next fall and will lose almost all of my credits earned these past two years if I transfer.

How much of a disadvantage will I be considering I will be a non-major when applying to graduate schools next fall (2011)? People suggested I take classes as a non-matriculating student, but unfortunately my busy courseload, clubs, and other stuff like writing my undergraduate thesis doesn't allow me time to take such courses. In the summer, I work a full time job, so I won't have any luck there either.

In addition, I think I will be graduating with a 3.5 or 3.6. Not a great GPA considering I read about all of these people with 3.9 GPAs in the SLP undergrad major getting rejected. It doesn't help that I want to commute from home, so the only schools I'm applying to are William Paterson University, Teachers College, NYU Steinhardt, and Montclair State University (all in the NY/NJ area).

Is there any hope for me?

Oh man. No one has an answer :frowning: (bump)

I have a Master’s in SLP, but got it back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth, so I can’t tell you specifics about admissions today. I do suspect, however, that you will need to find a way to take a good bit more undergrad level courses in such things as biology, anatomy and physiology (specific to the speech/hearing mechanism and processes), and language development.

Have you tried looking at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s website for info or advice?

Thanks for reply!

I took biology in the fall and got an A in the class. They offer anatomy and physiology at my school as well, but someone told me that general A&P doesn’t count. They don’t have one that pertains to speech mechanism. At my school I don’t have language development, but language acquisition, so I figure I’ll take that the next time it is offered at my school.

I’ll browse the ASLHA website to see if I can find more information and advice. Thanks =)
