okay so I’m having finals this week in my speech class, we had the final exam today and we’ll give the final speech in a few days. Our grades will basically be 1/3 speeches/quizzes during the semester 1/3 final exam 1/3 final speech, but my teacher/professor said that if we bombed the final exam and gave a great speech that’s what our grades would reflect bc he’s “teaching speaking not test taking” (which I thought was pretty cool btw) anyways he also said that he would tell us our exam grade on the day we give our speech in case we wanted to know if we could take it easy or give the best speech of our life. Anyways my question is would you guys check your grade before you spoke or wait till you were done? The teacher/professor said that if I gave my speech like I had in practice it would probably be an A+ but I didn’t have a lot of time to study for the exam, it was all short answer which I do well at and I don’t think I Failed it, but at the same time I just have no idea XD the thing I’m worried about is if I find out I bombed it I’ll freak out and give a horrible speech but I’m also concerned I could not find out give an okay speech then find out I bombed the quiz and wish I could have given a better speech. Haha this is really long sorry but to wrap it up, Would you find out before or after? And why ? Any advice for what I should do? Thanks in advance!
Ignorance is bliss. Don’t ask for your grade.
I really don’t think my performance in the speech would be impacted very much by my choice to either look or not look at my grade prior to delivering it.
I recommend not getting your grade beforehand. Just do your speech the way you practiced it and try your best. That way, regardless of what your grade was, you are in a good position to do well in the course. I don’t think knowing your grade beforehand would help. If you know you’re doing really well, then you might slack off on your speech and end up lowering your grade. If you know you did poorly, then you might get really nervous and stressed right before you have to give your speech and could impair your performance. Unless you’re the type of person to fret about not knowing your grade so much that you can’t do anything else, then I think learning your grade right before your speech is a no-win situation.
Thanks everyone! I decided not find out my grade before hand and I ended up acing both the test and the speech @baktrax @preamble1776 @comfortablycurt
