Hey! I'm curious if anyone here knows of a spelling competition for high school students - either state or nation-wide? I love words and spelling comes naturally to me. I think that it'd be fun, but was disappointed to learn that the Scripps National Spelling Bee isn't open to high schoolers :/ Are spelling bees considered juvenile?

Spelling bees are considered juvenile. Once you get to HS, it’s all about the essays and sciences.

Yes, for some reason, spelling bees are not popular in high school.

Darn… Do you know of anything else competitive-wise that has to do with words/spelling? I’m not a math/science person, except for my environmental activism… but I’d really like to do something with words :]

Essay contests. Writing. There are buttloads of them in the country.

There are vocabulary competitions, I believe.

Oh, I know, but that’s different from what I’m talking about. I already do writing competitions. I’m talking about spelling/words, lol

Oh really? Hm…I’ll look it up

Thanks silverturtle, but the National Vocabulary Championship was only held once, in 2008. Does anyone have other ideas?

Bumpp 10char

Spelling bees don’t happen in highschool because by then there would be a lot of kids that never get a word wrong.
